stu i have been saying it for years now shields is one hell of an area of a mark to fish, you have everything round there deep water, good salanity, strong current, mixed ground

plaice fishing is exceptional and i have some say sept is the best time for the plaice but a lot depends on the conditions ,but if conditions are not right for the plaice there are plenty of other fish about.

think myself probaly the best shot on the east coast.

John - the dab feels rough when stroked from tail to head, also has a D for dab shape to the lateral line just behind the head.

Oh, and the fish on the box is a plaice, as many have said

A Plaice is totally smooth in both directions John while as g-force says Flounder and Dab are rough. Dab also have a pronounced curve in the lateral line just before the gills.

ID by colour is almost impossible from photographs, the angle of the picture and the effect of the flash see to that (and as said Plaice, Flounder and even Dab can all have reddish spots). Fortunately there are other ways to tell, as coddy says for Plaice the giveaway is the Klingon headgear.
