Airline companies and Fishing Rods

Hello All

Looking for some advice. I'm off to Norway next year with some lads from work and have been looking at rod tubes cases for my beach casters that are CAA approved. The usual ones keep popping up ie Bazzoka Tubes. However been told by a regular traveller that these aren't that good. Any advice on tubes/cases and other types greatly appreciated. Kev

I use a piece of drainpipe, been to South Africa three times, Lanzarotte, forget how many times and never had anything broken, touch wood, the only problem I had was when they lost rods in South Africa, thankfully didn't need them for the first part of trip, when I got them back they must have been to every airport in RSA judging by the number of stickers.

Make your own from a length of soil tube much stronger than manufactured tubes. We travel to Gambia every year and never had any problems. Just make sure the airline you use have either no charge or set charge for rods as the soil tube is quite heavy and would cost a fortune if weighed and classed as excess baggage.

one point i missed off drain pipe and soil pipe have a bit of give in them and can take a bit of a bashing, whereas the manufactured alluminium ones are rigid and if they go they will go big style.

I regularly take fishing parties to Iceland and we use bazooka tubes the airline are ok with them.

Dont know who told you they were not good, i think they are.

And yes they are expensive but so are the rods i piut in them.

bazookas are spot on but expensive for a one off trip. Took a 110mm soil pipe to norway last year, no probs. Been salvaging on the building site today and have "borrowed" a length of 160mm soil pipe with end caps, as there are more rods going in it this time to norway. Also stuff the rod tube with food, tackle etc to save on baggage weight, as food is expensive over there!

my mate went to norway early in the year and took a bazooka tube with him it was spot on the way there but on the way back when the tube was coming off the conveyor the tube had snapped where it extends lucky for him his rods where ok i will be obtaining some soil pipe for when i go next march

Kev i,m going to just buy a bazooka. Les has a one and its very sturdy. Ian is going to put his rod in my tube(ha ha). I have paid excess baggage. Should fit 4 rods and 2 rests ok.

Mick, just a thought!

you say you have paid for excess baggage, check with the airline to see if this covers sports luggage.
I think you may find the excess baggage means your case weight.

Most airlines make you pay for sports luggage seperately.

i would check just in case and get them to put it in writing, email or letter which i would take with me to checkout as the checkout attendants sometimes dont seem to be aware of whats going on at times.

I am telling you this so you can avoid an experience i once had with sports luggage/excess allowance.

No its sports luggage. Nowegian gentelman at airline spoke perfect english i even described what i was bringing and its itemised on the tickets. I,m allowed 23kg extra. Big tube is about 9kg.I,ll be putting legs of stand in with my tip tornado and salt Bass rod Ians taking his Sonik and Diawa.I might even slip a boat rod in.
