  • Reel advice?

I've got two orange 6500 mag elites, one with uprated ceramic bearings and the other with a fancy centre mag upgrade. Done by previous owners

Both of them spin really smooth and very quick.

    BUT

Can I hell cast very far without a snap off. I reloaded both last night with Diawa sensor 15lb, and greased weasel leader.

First cast with the centre mag one and snap off about 40-50 yards or so, tried a few more times and if I was slow and not much power it was OK but didnt get very far, soon as I put any effort, snap!! each time in mid cast, so not the leader, seemed more like the spool running too fast for me?

Other reel without the conversion was a bit better, but again, as I got a bit more confidant and tried to put a bit more power, snap. And again seems spool going to fast for me.

    Using a slosh 20 and 30, a normal 7ht and a 7ht turbo I get no problems.

I'm guessing its the way I cast? I'm thinking I'd be better off getting rid of these two reels as they are far to fast for me to keep up with and get a 7ht mag?

    Any thoughts? Cheers.

i know the orange reel you have it used to be mine yes very fast but controllable.

you could try some heavy oil in bearing car gearbox oil.

or you could just put a break block in and use it with the centre mag conversion.

you could use a slightly thicker dia line on it 18lb or 20lb

too much line on a reel dos,nt help sometimes either.

anyway try 18lb mono on it load to 3mm under spool lip add one brake block and put a small drop of gearbox oil in each bearing and prob be ok.

they are controlable its just setting them up to suite yourself, getting used to them.
did you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?

Hi Gary, you've just learned the difference between a field reel and a fishing reel.

A field reel will usually be running right on the edge, everything has to be right for the cast to get it away otherwise it is snap and birdie.

A fishing reel for me needs to be completely different. It should above all else be safe, meaning a bit of dodgy timing or fishing into a headwind it will still behave and keep you fishing. In fishing conditions, wearing a floatie and in the cold and wet those ceramic bearings and super fast reels will give you nothing but trouble for the sake of maybe 20 extra yards. Just not worth it.

Casting lessons will help by giving you a good technique and making your cast smoother. But for fishing I'd stick to a bog standard reel set up to be safe not fast. This will give you far more distance than a flighty reel and a poor technique IMHO.

hi gary if you live anywere near me and wish to pop in i will help you to tame the reel i also have some bog standard bearings you can have. i will set the reel up no prob for you. malcombe is right a good sound casting technique does help not saying you hav,nt got this but fastest reels can usualy be tamed and used with no problems for fishing.
when i sold reel to mick who you got it off i could,nt even remember what bearings were in it but these bearings can still be used for fishing and be made docile. nice reel you have there it is an easy sellar if you wish to sell there were many enquiries about it.

pleased to help you in any way john

For a safe controllable reel fill it with line and try getting it to run for between 8 -12 seconds from start up to stop. If it spins much faster than this on full mags, your looking at a birdie.

as john has said the other option is thicker oil and or blocks and experimenting with the line level.

          Happy tuning!!!

cheers for the input guys. And thanks for the offer John I may take you up on it at some point!!!

I just think Ive bitten off more than I can chew with these fast reels.

The ctr mag one that John is on about cab easily spin about 20-30 seconds, it really is that smooth.

I was getting the hang of mags on for cast then turning them off mid cast etc, and i was doing ok, but as I said just when I try to give it a bit more then..snap..

I understand about putting the thicker oil in, and blocks etc, but thats probably spoiling all the good tuning the reels have had? maybe they would be more use to somone who know hows to control them better,

anyway, I'm going out later to a quieter spot so will have a few more goes with a different rod and different styles. Was using a cmc and afaw6 yesterday if it makes any difference?

Years ago when I was first shown hown to cast I used to do ofg all the time, I was also taugh a sort of pendulum where you stand facing the way you want to cast and let the weight rock back and forwards, then on its way back whack it out?? probably no more than an overhead thump i guess?

anyway, by no means am I a great caster, but seem to get by, just

as malcolm says a smooth technique helps to get your reels run a lot better also maybe if he has the time he could help you out not a bad caster by all accounts and helpful.
