it seems to me reading and looking at photos from our catch reports that the humble herring is being caught a lot more frequently than i can remember, now i have been fishing our coast line since the early 70's and in all that time i have never seen a herring landed, just wondering with all the protection the herring have been given it actually worked for once and the stocks are at last recvering , i really hope so.

I was out with Bert and Keith last year, and we were only about 2 mile offshore, and for an hour or so there were guillemots, gannets, arctic terns, and every other bird that could dive, all working a patch of water near us.
The only thing i can think of balling that shoal of fish, whether they were bait fish herring or mackerel, is Tuna. There was no signs of porpoise dolphin or seals, so whatever was down there was terrifying the shoal.

Funnily enough, I received a press release about a herring book recently:
Herring: A History of the Silver Darlings - NESA - North East Sea Angling - Sea Fishing UK
Trouble with herring for anglers is that there can be shoals miles long in front of you, and you won't even know it. I foul hooked one from the beach a couple of years back - I bet there were some big fish following that shoal!

Put it this way, we used to have tunny off the shores of whitby when the herring were in full swing. Before our ever so smart fishermen decided to whipe them out. If you give a fish a reason to return it will. So I think if they are making a comeback, be prepared for tunnyCod Mission: Cod over 5lb!
Success: 27/09/12
PB COD!!!: 9lb 13OZ!
Chance of Success?: Dismal, But possible!

I caught 6 herring last weekend just about 1/2 mile off the Tynemouth pier. They were swimming within the mackerel shoals.

Ok just my take on this, the humble herring will never ever be like they were as in numbers, we as humans will rape the earth, rape the seas as the population expands, personally I think the quotas are still to high that wont sit well with the fishermen of our land but hey who am i ? its money money money all the way sod the fish we need money . A total cod ban needs to be brought in asap ,,,and the herring ban still has a long way to go, will it happen ? nope no way . so ok here's where i get controversial should boat anglers pay a license I've seen some fine catches over the years, and on here a good sign is seeing some boat owners taking what they need but putting back many,,, well done you know who you are . also some true shore anglers will put back a fine cod or two thats fantastic a true sportsman well done . Just one last thing please please boat anglers please dispatch the fish you catch with the priest instead of throwing them in a box alive to die a slow death just a little gripe of mine cheers regards batt222
