  • Buying a rod and a reel shortly, advice welcomed.

As some may know from some of my posts I have just got back into fishing after about 15 years and I have seriously caught the bug.

I have borrowed my brothers and my dads fishing gear and will be buying myself a new rod and reel shortly and need some advice.

The rod I have used allot is a 12ft Daiwa Moonraker (my Dads old rod that I used to use on and off when I was younger) and a Shimano Titanos Aerlex GT8000 reel and I feel very comfortable with this combination and after all these years since my dad bought them (bought new when they first came out) they are still going strong and are pretty much as they were new although my dad does take great care of his gear.

I would like something similar to these and as far as I can gather you cant buy these new anymore and I am not sure what the logical replacements are for these.

If anyone can suggest a good rod and reel to replace these that would be superb, if I could get this rod and reel permanently I would but I cant and I do not want to buy second hand.

I dont want to spend a small fortune but am willing to buy something decent, my theory is that if you buy good stuff now it will still be good for many years to come, if you buy cheap it will work fine now but next week its probably going to fall to bits. lol

Many thanks for any help given.

(if this is posted in the wrong section I apologize)

Well its served my dad very well and as I say, its stood the test of time, the reel has also stood the test of time and is still very smooth and its hard to even notice its age apart from the odd scuff here and there.

I just hope there is a modern equivalent to these as I do want brand new and dont fancy second hand although if I cant find anything I like I might start considering second hand.

I wouldn't recommend the Sandstorm. If you want to buy a rod new by far the best rod for money would be the Shakespeare salt beach Mx the 12ft version is only 40pound on here:

Looks a decent rod that for the cash, might stick one in my boot for that price

I have to agree with shaun here mate. There canny rods for the price, and are much, much better than the usually floppy things they bring out (excluding the boat rods and the K2).

Hope you get sorted mate, you get al the advice you need from here.

I agree with the shakey salt but for a fixed spool reel the MX version is no good, I have a 13ft shakey salt long surf costs a few more quid than the salt but is a great rod. Shimano aerlex XS8000 big pit reel goes perfect with it.

Thanks for the help guys, was looking at spending around £100 on a rod although that Shakespeare does look decent, any suggestions around the £100 mark ?

Also, would you think about £50 is enough for a reasonable quality fixed spool ?
