I've made my own for over 20 years and got several moulds. The most successful by far is a fish shaped one that looks a bit like a bigger version of the krill, it's a heavy one, it weighs almost 3 oz. It out fishes everything I've ever used even the shentons (which by the way are excellent spinners) the extra weight means you can fish it really deep even in the strongest of tides. The only time I use any other spinner is fishing shallow water over kelp where I prefer a slower sinking spinner. I'll post a picky of it later this morning. The best shop bought spinner by far is the original Abu krill the newer version is good but nowhere near as good as the original ones (the larger version, can't remember the weight) most spinners will take plenty fish but some are unbelievably more successful. I have honestly seen times where 3 of us have used my home made spinners and had 50 / 60 macky each and the most anyone else has had has been about 10.

One of the best days macky fishing I ever had was on a boat. They were maybe 15ft down and I had a freshwater spinning rod,4lb line and a big mepp.60+ fish, cos in those days the skipper anchoed for 1/2 the day drifted the other half.
Fantastic sport and all bar about 1/2 a doz went back. That caused uproar on the boat, but as I told them,my fish,my rules.

I like the idea of making my own spinners this year as I lost loads last year and I have a pile of lead alloy ( very shiny ) to use up. What size split rings and hooks do you use ? Been looking at some on Ebay but need a bit of help with sizes.

                Appreciate any help

                Cheers

Makky will take shiny hooks they aint the most inteligent fish in the sea, another thing i did was using a 1 1/2 lb test spinning rod and a 2 oz weight i had a trace with a 2/0 hook on it, and on the hook i had a silver pipe cleaner wrapped round, put the pipe cleaner end in the eye of the hook bend it down and wrap it round. Great sport on light gear, its the only way i catch makky. 1 at a time

abu toby - silver one for when theres only the odd fish about. prefer a koster when thyre in decent numbers cos they cast so well. Cheap ones on ebay rust - decent ones dont

Worried just how much longer this annual frenzy will continue. Watched Trawlers on the telly last year. They find a shoal and scoop the whole lot up in one swoop. Now I might be wrong but if they keep doing this, leaving non to breed, then surely the numbers are going to decline drastically. They are doing the same with the Tuna in the pacific, coralling whole schools and leaving no survivors, madness.

                                best lure

bought a lure called stingsilda in whitby in the 70s and it was a killer.i fished alongside my mate both used a stingsilda i lost mine and changed to a toby ,i caught nothing else but my mate kept catching.managed to get a hold of a one from the good ol usa last year and hopefully will use it this year.
