  • S Shields pier 1st gate

    Hi,
Can anyone give me some advice about fishing around the 1st gate area on S Shields pier. I am thinking about trying for plaice tomorrow. How far before or after the gate is the area to fish, and what is the best distance to cast ?
Also can you tell me the best stage of the tide to fosh for them. I presume you cast into the harbour side, but can you confirm this?
Any help will be greatly appreciated, and many thanks.

Hello bazacodbasha, the man to ask for info around there would be Waco he'll tell u wat u need to know about that area and more. When a fish there I normally fish the flood and vary my distance until I find the fish. Anything from 35yards outwards(harbour side) will put u on to fish. Not just plaice but good stamp of flounder too. Best to fish it when its like a milk pond. hope this helps u m8. Gud luck

        Hi,
Thanks for your replies. I'm gonna give it a 'shot' tomorrow over high tide. Just dug some fresh ragworm today, and spent half an hour looking for peelers. Didn't get any peelers (though quite a few crabs 'just coming into their peeler stage' ) but managed to find 3 small soft backs, so at least I'll have one cast with fresh crab.
Nice forecast tomorrow so looking forward to a nice day out. If I catch anything it will be a bonus.
        Thanks again.

you can fish for plaice any where from bigade hut to first seat passed 1st gate into harbour preferably 1..2 hours after bottom water to top of tide depending on size of tide so theres water covering rocks, casting any where from 30-- 50 yards to whatever distance you can manage, an hour after high tide can hoy outa few plaice but normally they go off after flood , also sea side from seond seat passed gate can produce plaice aswell, another popular area on pier is from 42 to 46 mark on sea side 44 to 45 being most fished.

when fishing these marks calm sea and clear water is preferred but dont let that put you off if its not , i have seen plaice caught in murky choppy water from most marks on pier up 3.5lb with the best bag being 8 plaice all being over a pound and a another occasioin a bag of 5 all being 2lb + with rag worm best best bait and fresh crab coming second best for a change .and in recent weeks seen plaice up to 2.5lbs from seat before gate and seat after gate hop this helps you catch a big un mate

vary your cast as somecatch more at distance and others close in 30 yrds +
