Scratching baits

Hi all,
Going fishing tomorrow for spurs and thornbacks and I'l be using mackerel and sandeel on main rod but seeing as I have blanked on the last 4 trips I was going to fish a 2nd rod close in for ANYTHING with ragworm but I'm loaded with the cold and don't think I'l be up for digging today, what would you use ?
