When people check there tyres, say for instance in the tyne. Have they put them there themselves? If i want to put some in to collect crab, do i just pick a spot over low water and put them in. Whats stopping people then collecting from my tyres? Or do you just trust people not to touch other peoples tyres?

Personally I dont collect crabs but there is a few tyres where I dig and I have seen more than 1 person collecting from the same tyres, maybe try asking the next time you see someone collecting from them, I'd watch what your doing though mate, walking onto a beach and putting tyres down might get you in trouble for littering

I dont have any but know afew who do and theres nothing really stopping people from taking from somone elses tyres but it wont go down well with the guys who put the tyres down.
If you find that people have been taking from your traps just get down as soon as your traps are uncovered or even still alittle underwater that way you will beat the thiefs to them .
Heard about people lifting other peoples traps and chucking them because there close to theres, so try and find a spot not close to anyone to avoid any trouble.
Also If you put some tyres down make sure its on a small tide or you wont be able to get to them every tide .Last edited by shaun; 08-04-2011, 03:28 PM.

had my tyres for to many years to remember, but believe it or not the trouble i,ve had is nobodys buisness i think us crabbers become very territorial over what we think are ours i remember raiding traps myself terrywoods ones and thier paul was going to give me a slap for my cheek but i no how he felt what goes around comes around and i respect what paul was saying to me,over the years i,ve shot at with a air pistol hit with a baseball bat fought a father and son had beer bottles thrown at me and last year thier was a scottish lad raiding the traps threatened a young lad with a knife when he was in my tyres also a good few years ago i had a bit of a tussle with this 6ft 7'' 19.5 stone bloke over our tyres but everthing is sweet now and we are now just 1 big happy family lol happy crabbing....Rodbuilding & rod repairs

Back in the seveties and eighties I had my own tyres on the middens, but if you didn't turn up on a regular basis, they soon disapeared. if you have not arrived at your traps within a short while of them being uncovered by the tide, then I think they are fair game for anyone to crab from, that's the way it's always been. I have never had a problem with that system, including my own tyres.
I often crab in other people's tyres after they have done them theirselves and is not a problem, as long as you don't lift or disturb them.P.B. Cod 30lb-11ozs Balcary.

Ano how ya feel mate. Had trouble in 2009 with somebody doing MY tyres and saying they were his. Had not one bit of bother in 2010. 2011... see what happens, hopefully another good un-troublesome year.South Shields & District SAC

hmmm ....now thats why they sell guns at the fishing shop......anyhow ...just wondering a few yrs ago when i could not tell a peeler from a lobster i laid down a trap between some rocks in the summer . when i rretrieved the trap there was about 3 rocklings , 2 coalie . a grannylassher and about 50 crabs ...i remember retrievving them just before the were exposed to the air ... not knowing what they were ( peelers or not i just chucked them back ...) can i just ask on the subject of peelers ....could i not get peelers in traps ? or must they be specifically tyres?Punch and pull then let rip

Peeler war every year
Peelers are just like any other crab but you find when peeling they do there best to get as much shelter as they can because a soft shell means easy damage and easy food for most fish.................__................................ .............................
