Staithes (that area) has some of the best cod marks I know, get yourself out and about at low water in daylight(waders advisable) and you will be suprised at the amount of decent gullies there are in the area to the left of Cowbar jetty (one about 50 yards just over the access steps to the jetty), any bait will do, but best results from large crab and mussel baits.
If you walk round the point to the right hand side of Staithes (towards Port Mulgrave) you will see some of the best gullies I know (good in daylight also).
But be carefull especially to the right you can get cut off, also same prob if you go to far left.
The end of the jetty(Cowbar) can be good on the first of the ebb, any bait will do on there (plenty of lobsters get brought in tangled up in your line). Be carefull if there is a decent swell on , it can come over the top even with the new defences in place,
You will experience some good sport there.
Middle of January, expect to catch a monster, lots of people have.

Yes Graham\" Cewbar gully can rule\" , if you ever get chance to fish it you will see why, most of the best marks around that area are an absolute nightmare to get to but Staithes has very easy access, it starts to produce codling very early in the season and some of the fish caught are decent in size. Another plus for the Staithes/Cowbar is the types of shots, you can fish the cliff tops into sea that hardly ever gets fished (lots of red codling), you have a decent jetty with mixed ground along its lenght, then of course the gullies and there are loads of em, some are massive and filled with kelp.
All this within half a mile of Staithes itself.
Plus you have Staithes itself which is one of the prettiest little fishing villages you will ever clap eyes on.
But like I said earlier \"the best I know, not anybody else\" just trying to be helpful lads.
P.S the biggest fish I\'ve seen landed from the jetty was 22lb, which was taken on salted down rag.
