  • Have the rules changed

I've been fishing for a number of years now, and a member of NESA for nearly as long. Back in the day NESA was the source of of much of the knowledge I now put into practice. Users such as 'Yourstruley', 'Stores', 'Fishfinder', 'Codseeker' and 'Sless' to name a few were always on hand to offer advice. Back then social media wasn't as big as it is now, some people didn't even have the internet and posting from your phone (as I am now) was unthinkable.

Back then I used to fish once or twice a week, whatever the conditions, and over the years I came to the same conclusion my peers had been telling me from the start. Cod fishing in the winter was always better with strong northerly winds and with a good see on. Peeler and lug worm (yellows if you could get them) were the go to baits.

Mackerel fishing came and went with the summer (thank God) and I went from fishing the piers (the natural starting point for anyone wanting to catch mackerel) to seeking out quieter. Mark's to avoid 6oz leads.and fosters cans.

Bear with me lads it's not all going to be an nostalgia trip.

The point of my post is this, recently there has been a lot of local reports of, what I would call 'strange' catches. Mackerel in November, dogfish, bonito , red mullet and most notably plenty of good cod catches when the sea has been flat and very little wind to speak of. So the question is, have the rules changed or is it simply that more people have access to and are posting on forums and social media.

    What's your thoughts?

    changing times.

its looking like things definately changing with warm water fish being caught further north more regularly . the weather is un typical with a record temperature for this time of year ........ 20 degrees C in top of north east scotland just this week ..... its november and we can expect 16C in a day or two and mackerel 8 miles off shore reported in a boat report a day or two ago.. the times they are a changin and fishing will change with it. undeniable

The worlds going mad Phil, its the only explanation... Anyway, long time no see!!

I do think the fact that every Tom dick and Harry now has an Internet ready mobile phone, tablet or laptop means that every fish caught ends up posted on some site or another. Maybe the strange catches have always been here only now they get publicised for all to see.... Either that or its global warming in full effect.

Several small tuna caught off the north east coast in the last couple of years mate, hopefully they will be followed by their bigger brothers and sisters!

I'll be trying for one of those little fellas next year. Latimers has had them in the past 3 years, caught on the local trawlers.

As for winter fishing, reports of another double being caught last night, and a few good bags as well. So looks like I'll just forget everything I've learned and just fish any conditions lol

                ''tunny''

have a deek on youtube. films on there of monsterous tuna (tunny) caught off the mecca that was, Scarborough. Scarborough Tunny Club.. simply gigantic. caught on split cane rods thick as yer arm and reels like cranes from rowing boats which got dragged all over the sea. seems like it was hard graft . a fish like those caught in 30 s would be worth many thousands of £'s today. the commercial boats would be out there untill they'd got em all. No mercy shown...see link next post

Nothing more than sheer number of people using the Internet and reporting things. A look at historical records from way back shows a load of unusual fish caught, just not as many as not as much was reported

Aye, just ask latimers if you can follow their boats out in your little kayak mate

never thought it unusual to catch odd mackies in november from a boat, only been on here a year so i would agree with you about more people being on internet now to report catches that could'nt back in the day.

Water temps are still high 11.2 degrees today, just got in from fishing there and outside temp is still 11 degrees, warmer water will bring more species, one thing i can't understand the water temps are getting warmer but was a poor season for crab??
