Info about my 7000

Got a secondhand Abu Amb 7000. Are there different versions of it? I dont mean like the 7000i etc, but different versions of the actual 7000. I only ask as mine is the only I have seen with the red side plates with the black bands round (with capacity details on) and a silver spool. All others with my side plates have a black spool. Has someone just upgraded the spool on mine??

Mick the Abu 7000,s are mass produced in China now so there are loads-thats why they are cheap. The original ones had "made in Sweden" stamped into the side plate.
They reckon these were the better-but to be honest i,ve got an old second hand 7000 thats as tough as old boots. Even took it to Norway with me and fished rough ground.
It would,nt surprise me if your reel has different bits on bought via flea bay.

aahhh I didnt realise that. Well I was just wondering. Love the reel, about as much as the slosh 20 I used to have, wish I kept that bugga. Thinkin I may look into removing the level wind tho, as my thumb is still trying to level the line with the level wind on lol

If you turn the reel over and look on the foot,there will be a number stamped on it....in this number there will be a date of manufacture,I think the one you have is a original model and a good reel.
The 1st 7000 that came out had only brass bushes for bearings..this reel was 1970 model with red alloy side plates.
After that it was called the 7000c this had a higher gear ratio and ball bearing...some where in the late 80s and 90s..very good reels and as Mick said build like brick sh1tehouses.
Get rid of the levelwind and it will serve you well.

Still a shore fishing reel mate,but could also be used for light boat fishing as well...so I know what you mean.

The 7000c is a good reel but by today standards a little slow on retrieve compaired to the SLOSH and Daiwas...but one thing for sure you could'nt bust the ABU 7000's

Fair comment. Mind I've got a slosh 30 about 10 years old that I hardly use now but I reckon you could hit it with a sledge hammer and it would still chuck. I think it's a spot on reel and would still use it today but it doesn't fit the reel seat on my rod, I once chucked 170 yards with it with a 6oz gripper on (wind was with me like).
But level wind??

ho ho ho here i go me myself always thought level wind reels were for the shore i certainly dont reccomend them for boat fishing, have seen too many souls squealing that their finger is trapped after getting snagged up while driftingho ho ho

I always thought they were for the shore too, as I always here of people taking them off to gain extra distance casting... if that makes sense lol

The "old" 7000's were and are still great reels. If I recall correctly they were the step between the 6000/6500 salmon/shore and the 9000/10000 boat reels and were aimed at light boat / heavy shore fishing.The early reels , as already pointed out, were with bronze bushings and a 3 mm spool spindle. The retrieve was 4.1 : 1 (I think) the later reel went to ball bearings with a 4 mm spool shaft and a retrieve of 5.3 : 1. All the "old" spools were black with 3 or 4 mm spindles newer coloured spool are all 4 mm spindles and you can "mix and match" with the exception of the lever drag models. I have 4 7000C's myself two with level winds for night fishing and two converted to CT's. Properly tuned they are very forgiving for casting technique and are capable of decent distances in the right hands. You can convert and old bushed reel to ball bearings by using the bearings for a 6000/6500 - straight swop.

sorry to ramble on but the old ABU reels were ground breaking technically and great quality. Now they are made in China... what else do I need to say !

when you say you cast 170 yards with a gripper on was this on a field or over water just curious
