Fished two beaches down there bout five years in a two day comp in Nov...About 160 anglers and the fishing was really bad. More anglers blanked than caught. I was one of the lucky ones and won day two with a Mackeral and a small bass!!!!! Other species caught were dabs, plaice and flounder and small pout You could more or less touch the trawlers as they steamed up and down the beaches looking for the sole and plaice. Can't remember the two beaches but will try and get names..

if you do anything apart from fishing you will probably get crabs.

Alreet daz if your going in sept a might see you's there I'm planning trip with the young un. A worked down there in sept and always take my light gear( tip tornado ultra lite ) with me. We stayed in a holiday camp on hayling island was about 35quid a nite for a 2 bed shally. Resembled Hidey Hi ha. basic but clean. fished various marks on the island which is ya best chance of fish, bass and stari's being main target. Only managed one fish on me last cast but turned out to be my PB a 15lb+ stari the only bait worth takin is crab! fresh crab at that. There's a crackin bait shop in portsmouth cant remember its name its in seangler at back. you've got to go up a huge hill and its just on the decline next to a petrol station. I'll get more details and PM ya m8.

The shop your thinking about is probably Allans Marine. They do stock fresh devon peeler this time of year but they aint cheap. Stick your order in nice and early. Sadly Allan himself died not to long ago, he was a really top bloke, the shop remained in the family as far as I was aware.

                  this might help.

Moved home last July after living there for 20 years. You will be wasting your time and money using Peeler, the only fish that takes them regular down there are the Smoothhound and they will be long gone by september bar a few stragglers. Certainly not worth targetting that late in the season. Best baits are ragworm (on it own for Sole) or tipped off with a sliver of squid or just after a blow slipper limpet can be deadly for Bass.

To be honest unless you have another reason for choosing Portsmouth I'd look elsewhere as generally speaking the fishing is crap. You will catch Pout (loads) possibly Sole and school Bass, maybe late season Black Bream (tiddlers but good fun) and thats about it. You will also be pulling in ten tons of weed every cast (no I'm not exaggerating, late summer weed can make fishing a nightmare in the Solent, this is typical and every cast:

You will get much better fishing in Sussex (Brighton area or Pevensey Bay area) or Dorset (Chesil Beach is one of the best places to fish in the country). PM me if you want more info, happy to help as much as I can.
