  • Pennel hook size??

    Newbie question again...

Was thinking of adding an extra hook to my rigs. I use size 2/0 Aberdeen hooks, what size hook for the pennel? Do people just use the same size, or smaller ones??

    Cheers

i've recently been using mustad circle hooks for the top pennel hook.they seem to work well plus with the point being turned in they're less likely to catch on kelp and rocks.

use the same size for both! More than often its the top hook thats holding the fish. Use a small top pennel hook and you can say goodbye to a decent fish.

I now have a doubt on pennel rigs,I believe fishing smallish baits say 4 or 5 inches long Its fine to use a pennel rig.
But when fishing big baits say 2 large blacks and crab or razor fish I think a large single hook with a sliding bait stop in place of upper pennel hook is best.
I normally fish a 6.0 main hook with a 2.0 pennel when fishing for cod in the winter, and always a big baits some 8 to 10 inches long loaded full with blacks and rag or crab/razors.

I have at times had great pull down bites and slack-liners but missed the fish,on reeling in have found both main hook and upper pennel tangled up together with the hooks linked up so no hook point showing.

On Sat fishing the Big Brid comp I had this conversation with my mate and I will now not use a pennel rig for cod with very large baits.
          Just my thoughts.
