  • Cullercoats 18th Feb.

I fished Cullercoats for the second night running. Last night saw a 1m LW at approximately 2030hrs. The moon was full and high in the sky, accompanied by a blanket of cloud cover. The wind was SW, turning to SE at 7 knots. In reality it was a still warm night. The conditions were spot on!
I fished 3 down and up until approximately 0100hrs (part of the flood).
I began with a few chucks from The Screws. The surf was still pretty boistrous due to the swell.
I moved to The Warriors (still a bit boistrous) and then on to The Goatsies. I was casting in to a kelp heavy gulley that screamed Cod but it was not to be!
I think these marks would be a prime spot after a low pressure spell during a calm spell. It is definitely a place I'd try in the Summer for the chance of a Kelpy. I've had small ones from Tynemouth beach and a little further North in Brown's Bay (last Summer).
I trudged across the Harbour and had a few chucks from Beacon Rocks. I had a couple of knocks during the start of the flood. This got my hopes up and so decided to move on to the Southern wall. Unfortunately this was my second blank in a row. I really thought that with the calmer conditions (after the previous cheeky SE) Cullercoats would have thrown up at least one! There is the potential for a Sunday day session. I have a week left in Arbroath before my adventures and so the gear may travel North for Arbroath and Usan (my last Cod was a 3lber in Dec 10 from Table Rock i Usan).
I have noticed from the forums that a few Cod have turned up South of the Tyne. Well done to those lad's!
    All the best, Wayne.

was on Cullercoats beach this morning with the dog, far to rough for Goats, Screws, Warriors, looked nice for the harbour, sometimes fished better in daylight.

      Acknowledged!

      Alan,
I have only fished the Northern marks discussed during the last two nights. I knew that it was just too much the first night (only because it has now been confirmed by a guru lol) and it probably was for The Screws and Warriors on the second. The kelp in the gulley from The Goatsies faired a hell of a lot better as it was a lot calmer! Anything seaward was better off on a fast spin in the machine. I moved in to the harbour on both nights. On reflection I probably should of fished the first night (the roughest) in the harbour and the second night in to Crisps Gulley.
Despite no fish I discovered and sampled the Northern skeers. Are they are best fished on a nearly flat calm?
I want to fish North Crab Hill (I have had your article sent to me by David). I'm hoping for a better tide and I am going to crack it on first visit during daylight (safety).
      Thanks for the reply!
      All the best, Wayne.

no problem Wayne, if you wany any help just ask, North Crab Hill had to be my favourite mark, wise to go first at daylight, takes a bit of getting used to the crossing, there is one rock, that rocks when you stand on it, lets you know you are going the right way, the deepest bit is just before you actrually get onto the Hill. The Hill used to fish well in daylight, my best fish taken from the Hill, of just over 8lb came off there in daylight, also had some canny bags in daylight.

Well done to to Paul Wright!

My intention was to fish The Hill but unfortunately I couldn't get on. I couldn't get out on Thursday night. That tide was ideal at 0.8m. The tides are even better tonight but I've not looked at the weather and sea state.
I was chuffed for the lad who pulled out those elusive Cod from North Crab Hill!
I'm looking at getting out next weekend! That will be the last of my fishing due to work until approximately September.
                All the best, Wayne.
