found this picture taken by a lad called kela who i am pretty sure is from here (btw some very informative pics) and just wondering where is the gut or if it is the whole of the rock platform on this picture may sound a stupid question but trying to learn some new marks so any help appreciated

Looks like that picture was taken after the big s/easterlies last year when the top end of the beach was all sanded up. The big rock going all the way out to sea is South Crab Hill - Slatey Gut is just to the right (south) of the Hill. If you have a look during the day, you'll see a grey coloured slate skeer going out, giving it it's name - it gets a bit weed covered further out.

The Hill stretches a lot further out to sea, Slatey Gut is probably about halfway. I like to fish it on about a 0.7 or so size low tide, at which point the hole is only 20 or 30 yards from where you're standing. A few short chucks should soon tell you if there are fish in there - if not I'll generally have a few chucks a bit further out, casting almost parallel to the beach. It can throw up some good fish, and as Tony has said is best fished when there's a good N or N/E lump on coming around the end of the Hill.

Here's one my mate had back end of January last year from there during a club match, about 11 1/4lb if I remember right (sorry for cr@ppy mobile phone pic!)

        Hope this helps mate

Couldn't ask for a better guide to that mark Adam - had thought about fishing the SBRAAC match there myself tonight Dave, but thought Tynemouth might be out & don't want to fish in a crowd

Very true that Dave - remember fishing early 80's with Terry Patterson my first time at Private Beach up Cresswell, some inter-club match or sea league; I had one 14lb odd and one 3lb odd, won the match easily with 2 for just short of 18lb and poor Terry never even got a bite!

Aye Dave - our match tonight is 2.5 hours down and 30 mins of the flood so we'd have to shift off there sharpish and go somewhere else once we realised there was no pig about ...going to try a bit further north tonight methinks
