  • Fri 07 Jan 11. A long, hard day!

    Happy New Year to all!

I planned and executed a long day out (unfortunately on my own) last Friday.
I prepped my kit and considered my marks, with the same apprehension I know a lot of you are experiencing due to the lack of shore Cod! Still, I'd rather be out trying!
I had decided to try a number of marks over three tides.
The wind was from the SE but turned sooner than predicted, in to more than the expected ESE.
David I could hear you laughing and whispering "I told you so....! That is why I am Skywalker and you are Yoda (not a comparison in age obviously)!
The unexpected change in the wind found me battling the elements from almost the very start.
I managed approximately an hour on Sh*t Hill before moving to the Lobster Pot's in King Edward's Bay. It was fishable but not as calm as I think it needed to be. I had arrived at this mark at approximately 0930hrs as LW was at 1110hrs. I moved on to King Edward's Bay beach for the flood.
I would normally leave the beach until the night but decided on fishing this mark during the day a) for a change b) out of dogged determination.
The sea by mid-afternoon was rough and had a cracking swell. I held bottom and so pushed on! At approximately an hour after HW and without a single knock I moved to a HW chuck called The Oxfauld.
The sea may have been just too big to fish at this point but The Oxfauld gut provided an option of fairly deep and slightly less volatile water.
The rain was coming down now and I had decided two tides and four marks without a knock was enough!
I was seriously considering continuing to Brown's Bay but the sea was just too big to fish the rock marks.
I had tried, despite almost accepting possible defeat before venturing out! It was a pity that no Cod turned up but I still had a cracking day in the elements accompanied by my own thoughts!
I'm back to work now but unfortunately at the wrong end of the country. I'll be back in Arbroath for part of next week and so my chips are all in for Usan and Arbroath! I'm hoping to see some decent Cod up there and hopefully during the weekends at home!
I have two weeks at home in Febuary and then I'm off to another place until October!
Hopefully the Cod will make another appearance in Febuary! After that, all I'll have to keep me sane are the memories of my last two day visit to Eyemouth and the thoughts of a late Summer visit on my return!
Good luck to all those still participating in the search!
    All the best, Wayne.

Saw someone on sh*t hill Friday, (wife in car) says, wouldn't want to eat fish from there. Anyway, hard luck mate, at least you were wetting a line.

Haha Wayne - don't think I've aged as well as Skywalker but I do have a similar wardrobe.

I've always found Sharpness to be one of the more fickle marks in the area, in relation to the sea conditions and not the most comfortable places to fish in an SE hooly. Still, I'd rather have been stood next to you than sat doing sums with some girl with nits.

Hope you have more luck in Usan and especially in that "other place". Will keep in touch.

Ten out of ten for effort. The fish will have to show up again some time.
