Second rod

I'm looking for a second rod. I've been using an Apollo Mk 1 for well over 10 year now, which i love. Looking for a similar size rod or bigger and around the same casting weight. Looking for a second hand rod in good condition for around £100 to £130. Not sure what rod i want as i haven't been able to try any out.
Can you lads/lass's suggest any?

Sonik SK3 14ft 5-7oz lots of lads on here have mixed feelings about them but i swear by mine.

have a look in the free papers you get the odd bargin, I picked up a cono-flex enigma for £80 quid a couple of years back, and av still got it.

Whats peoples views/opinions on the Century CME, SK3 and the Apollo MK3?

CME is a lovely rod, stable in the wind and tide, will handle 7oz no bother and very easy to cast. Capable of decent distance as well - I learnt on mine and did my first 200 metre cast on the field with it.

Only downsides are it is a heavy blank and the bite detection is not the best but that will be the case with pretty much any mixed / heavy ground rod.

I paid £127 for a mint CME off fleabay a few year ago. For £130 you should get a nearly new rod second hand. Another rod to look out for might be a second hand Reelsport Response, built by Terry Woods on a Century blank and IIRC based on the old Tip Tornado Grand Prix.

Malcolm, just to give me a bit perspective about it, how far (max) would you expect to get casting off a pier with a bit of side wind, 5oz gripper and large crab bait say. And it's raining and your using 20lb reel line?

Depends how busy it is. Off the end of Shields say where there is not much room and using a Brighton cast I usually just about clear the snags but I very much doubt I'm getting more than 70 - 80 yards. Fishing the 44 if there is no-one around and I can use a short drop pendulum maybe 100 yards.

To put it in context my pb on the field is 225 metres (just over 245 yards) but that was in excellent casting conditions. My average field cast over a few meets is 200 - 205 metres (220 yards give or take). On a beach in the conditions you desbribe but using 15lb line I reckon 140 yards if I get one right.

Chukka mentioned it on another thread but there is a huge amount of bobbins talked about how far people can cast, mostly by people who've never had a proper measure on a field. The first thing you notice at a casting day is how far away that 100 yard line really is, something that off the beach or pier casting into water is very difficult to judge.

Thanks for that info mate, It's obviously a completely different ball game when it comes to tournament casting.
