  • New Fishermen

I was out with my wife and kids yesterday and came across something I'd wished I'd never seen

A guy - new to angling by his own admission out fishing on his own. He had a half decent set up - Beachcaster and Multiplier, an experienced friend had set him some rigs up - But... BIG BUT!!!

He experienced friend hadn't advised him how to fish properly he was woefully lacking in some basic gear.

    1. He had no disgorger, pliers or forceps to unhook any deep caught fish (he didn't even have a knife present to cut line.
    2. He had no preist for dispatching any fish he wished to keep or would have had to humanely kill.
    3. He had no clue of how to detect a bite when on - he actually got one while we were there and when I informed him he just watched it.
    4. He was usin size 4/0 hooks to fish from a pier where even on the best fishing day of your life a 2/0 would be more then big enough.

Points 3 and 4 really made my P**s boil as the fish he deep hooked was a nice undersize coalie of around a pound, he faffed around ramming his fingers down the poor fishes mouth trying to get the hook, when he finally managed it he ripped the hook from it's gut, leaving blood on his hands and the pier and just chucked it back. The inevitable result - Fish went belly up!

Now I'm not really mad at the new guy - but his mate? ... well he really should try and help him out a bit and fish with him a while - show him the ropes and tell him to buy certain items of fishing gear to make his, and the fishes lives a bit easier.

For anyone new to fishing reading this please ask in the fishing tackle shop what you need and they will direct you to buying the right gear. Most Tackle shops are top notch and will not rip you off.
    Here fishy, fishy!

    wer'e not all perfect

couple of things mate, you don't need a priest to dispatch a fish, hand in the mouth snap fishes neck, job done, humane way to go.

secondly by using bigger hooks he wouldn't be able to catch as many undersize fish anyway, although we all know small fish can take big baits, the accepted rule is to match the size of fish targeted to the hook size. had he been using 1'os he may have caught and unwittingly killed smaller stuff.

sounds like this lad is learning, something most of us would have done when we were a lot younger, gaining experience as we went, you can't really have a go at this lad because he hasn't got a clue, or because his mate can't hold his hand every sesh.

bite detection? wonder how many bites we have all missed when fishing two rods in at night in a gale, or when talking to fellow anglers on the pier or beach?

obviously pliers / disgorgers do come in handy, but to be totally honest, if you dont want to hurt the fish, either just dont go fishing or try barbless hooks

get a bid fed up of everyone getting on their high horse when they see someone doing something they don't agree with, i suggest if you were that concerned, you could have given him your number and arranged to meet up with him next time you went fishing, if you did good on you, if you didn't well don't think you should get straight on here to give the new lad a bit of a bashing.

not everyone is perfect and some people are just too quick to criticise, although we are all entitled to our opinion....

You can always cut the line and leave the hook in. Personal choice but I'd rather lose a 20p hook and watch a fish swim away than rip its guts out and chuck it back dead

I have to agree with 'elliot.e', I used to do this when I started fishing, but am now much the wiser thanks to good anglers showing me the way.

By the way 'elliot.e', I only ever break a fishes neck when bleeding mackerel to cause less mess when filleting, but a dont think snapping a fishes neck is the best way too go. A think uv been watching to many saw movies!!

Yeah, i always do that, it's either that or death in some cases but I still am concerned about the fishes ability to eat and it's quality of life after release. Heard the hook rots away but how long does this actually take for the average hook.

i cut the hook off if a flatty swollows it right down and i cant get it out, but dout a small cod or coaly will survive long swiming about with a 4/0 viking in its stomach.

this makes me laff hahaha at some of the so called points that this thread starter has stated. here we go , my points , i hate coalies especaily when you put a couple of live blacks and a crab out and it gets nailed by a damn coalie! so i couldnt care less if every 1 i put back went belly up but that is my oppinion and im sure many people like catching them, saying that you stated that the 1 that this bloke caight was about 1 LB this says to me that most 1lb caolies are usually size or there abouts! also u say that he shouldnt be using 4/0 hooks but then u winge because this caolie has swallowed his hook, what if he was using size 2 or even 4's cos that what i use when flatty bashing , this would mean that he would gut hook even more fish ? so think abit before you try and winge about people. another 1 that makes me laff is this thing your meant to carry to kill the fish hahahahahaha as if im gunna jam half a pool que in me bag when a go fishing along with me 20 leads and all the rest of your tackle! dought it. whats rong with waking its head once on a rock /pier wall or were ever your fishing. me personally the few fish that i do keep i leave my fish to die them selves or gut them stright away, you may say this is nasty or watever, but when you start waking them the flesh inside gets bruised so this the reason i leave them to die.

why if you no it all ? not give him some tips instead of coming on here and talking quite a bit of rubish .... anyway tite lines all

                            ok - points taken.

                            1. I did try to offer some advice, and I did offer to meet up with him - He wasn't interested (some people don't talk to "strangers" much.
2.Yes I agree with several comments here about cutting the line and releasing the fish where possible.
                            3. I'm not being Hypocritical - I'm just geniunely just concerned about new starters not being helped/wanting any help - This guy was fishing in a very public place in the middle of the afternoon (It looks bad for the sport if a member of public is walking past and you are faffing about with your fingers down a fishes throat ripping out a hook with blood all over).

I see to have stirred things up a bit - everyone is entitled to their opinion and some may agree, some may disagree, that's why this site is so good, you get many varied answers in many various forms - Some light hearted - Some not .
