  • Newbiggin Promenade

Used to be a cracking venue over a high tide with a bit of a blow on.
Many an evening spent pulling cod flatties coalie and whiting from the steps just down from the working mens club where you could safely park at night. As many as 30 fish between 3 of us from 4pm till 9pm on many a Winters visit.

The import of Sahara sand was a total disaster as it is being drawn back out to sea and causing gullies for children to fall down I hear making the beach totally unsafe for bathing and of course unfishable as the tide barely reaches the promenade any more.

Two years since I have been now and recently heard that the tackle shop had 'gone under' partly due to those 'improvements' the district council made causing anglers like us (visiting from Consett) to abandon our weekly habits and go to pastures new that were never as good. The guy in the tackle shop was excellent; helpful and never expensive compared to other places. We used to spend about 20-30 quid a sess. in there stocking up on gear etc. purchasing bait.

    Two points from this then:

1 Is the promenade beginning to be fishable again at any point as the sand is swept away or have the fish totally disappeared... anybody any good results?

2 Is there anywhere similar from Newbiggin down to South Shields for us to try out that is not too far a walk and safe in the winter but produces when there is a bit of a swell on? (not too snaggy please)

You cant get any better than shields pier during or after a swell. It can produce the goods at these times, i had some decent bags of codling last week on monday and tuesday, 3 fish for 6lb 5oz and 4 fish for 6lb. it relatively easy to fish and you wont encounter snags if you can fire a lead over 60 or 70yds roughly. it can be fairly snaggy at time but theres always the chance of that BIG one over the winter period.

    Hope this helps bud!!

yeah u cant go wrong with shields pier like andy says or the walkway on smaller tides which u can park ur car close by but have heard storys of cars getting damaged lately so id probly park well out the way. even hebburn marina seems to be doing well lately. i fished the newbiggan prom in the open as the sea was far to big on lynemouth and nearly had my mates rod in the water and got sick of tripods getting pulled over well there were plenty people on the prom and i didnt see any fish get caught, all i caught was a snag every cast so i give up early worst fishing in my life

You don't need to go past first gate on S/S peir mate...at high water you can fish the river side and catch decent codling with a bit of a swell rolling in ;-)

          Cheers

Hi, Give the Rex prom a go over high water. It's directly below the Rex hotel on the sea front at Whitley bay. Codlings, cod, coalies, place, dabs, flounder, all regulaly caught. Clean bottom straight out, cast 60/80yds. Park in streets close by.
            P.B. Cod 30lb-11ozs Balcary.

Your talking crap ! The new beach can be one of best venues around at high water with a decent sea running, of course it helps if you have a bit of an idea in what your doing.
