  • Frozen Bait disaster

Just come back from working away to find the missus, God love her as someone has too, switched off the mains before taking the kids away for a few days before switching it back on again when she got back. This was ok because "she'd emptied the freezer".

Not my bloody freezer she hadnt😡. Over 250 peeler, £75 worth of cart and a load of bluesy and runny down wasted!!! Anyway, in between scraping out the cart gloop I re-defrosted a couple of peeler and they didn't seem to stink or be completely shot to mush.

Any thoughts on if they'll be useable or am I best just binning them?

I know a couple of lads who will re-freeze if the crab seem ok. It doesn't seem to effect there fishing either.... Still blank LOL. Personally I would chuck it but why not try using a 2nd rod with the dodgy bait on alongside your normal rod as see how you get on?! Like HH, I would be interested to know how you do. Best of luck

I found a bag of peeler sitting on top of my freezer one day. “Someone” had taken them out to get stuff from below them in the draw and forgot to put them back. They’d been out overnight, defrosted and were sitting in a relatively warm garage. They refroze OK, remained tough enough when defrosted for use and still caught fish.

It all depends on how long they have been out for.

Don't know about the cart (never use the stuff) but the rest should be fine. If the freezer wasn't opened, odds are it'll have been 24 hrs or so before anything will have even started to defrost (maybe longer if it was pretty full) and how well everything was wrapped & packaged. If the couple of crab you've checked seemed ok, odds are the rest will be fine too. Besides, it's usually best to mix a bit of fresh bait in with frozen - I'll often tie a handful of lug around frozen crab to make "Gorgon's Heads" in the winter, or mix in a bit of fresh mussel here and there. Likewise, I'm sure the bluey & runnydown will be fine for binding on - I've re-frozen blacks several times after a session if not used - in fact some people I know swear by them when they're going a bit sticky. Just mix it in with some fresh lug or rag or whatever and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Cheers lads. I've calmed down and the big news is the missus is still alive.

Worst job has been scraping out the liquified and refrozen cart - couldn't even pry my bait flask out of the gloop so have had to defrost that draw and the stink is unbelievable. Think I'm going to try to keep the crab and get some more to supplement it.

To fund it I'm going to sell all the missus's shoes on EBay.

I had a late delivery of frozen crab from Wales off e Bay (never again),they went in the freezer as it cost me 60 quid,I still caught a few fish on them, use them to bulk other baits up or like mentioned on another rod.
