      My mate used to salt them to draw out excess liquid. Anybody else do that?

        Yes mate, it works a treat. Not just for mussel either, all those little scraps of bait that you would struggle to get on a hook, just hoy them and and an instant usable sized bait. Also great for making cocktail baits.

          mussels for bait

          i like korky65 and lowrider's idea and wonder if winkles or wilicks as we call them in the northeast would also work? has any one tried ?

                best results i have had in past is to bait up hook as normal with hook snood tied on and then freeze.

                take them down in a wide mouthed food flask a must for every angler and take one out as you need it.

                advantages no waste and bait slowly defrosts in water and it casts out great without bits flying off.

                i prefer this way to fresh.
                did you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?

                  get ya self a roll of finger bandage u can make up alsorts of baits,
                  knot 1 end then fill with what u want up2 around 3-4 inches.
                  have made many different baits crab & mussel, macky & mussel, crab & old lug, blacks & yellows, razor & blacks or i have even made big cocktail baits with a mix of 5-6 different baits 4 when we have the big sea's 4 a few days like now.

                    when i use mussel before shelling them i pour boiling water in sink then put mussel in for a few seconds they firm up easyier to put on hook the fish dont seem to mind caught loads

                      try using fox arma-mesh to make mussels into sausages works much better and also good for mixing all sorts of different baits
