Discarded Hooks.

I had a phone call yesterday (Monday) from a gentleman who rang to tell me that he had been walking his dog on Lynemouth beach. Sadly the dog picked up a discarded hook that someone had just cut off and thrown away with bait still on it. The animal had to be taken to a vet, but when the chap was told it was going to cost £1,000 to carry out an operation to remove the hook from the dogs stomach he had no option but to have the dog put to sleep as he couldn't afford to pay that much money.
The dog owner told me that he knew of four other instances of dogs picking up hooks that had been thrown away on that beach with bait still on, these animals hadn't been in such distress as his dog, but still cost money to have the hooks removed from their mouths.
Please lads, if you are going to throw old hooks away take the bait off and either throw the hooks into the sea or better still take them home and put them in the bin.

I would ask though did the guy not have Pet insurance? I always keep my dog on a leash when I am out walking as sadly you can never be sure what is lying about and dogs will sniff and eat just about anything. I care too much about my dog to take the risk.

Well said Sam, I see hooks and other things discarded on a regular basis. many anglers unwrap a frozen crab leaving the cling film on the rocks/beach, just stick it in your tackle box and put it in your bin when you get home, it weighs nowt.

Really sorry to hear about what happened to the lads dog I fish lynemouth alot and you sea crap getting left all the time by lads that clearly don't give a toss one night I found some traces and even a tip light by lads who just couldn't be bothered as said it takes nowt to take it home I use bait tubs and stick rubbish in them till I get home.
It's a shame that a dog has had to die coz of it I'm not but used to be a dog owner and it would have devastated me

Come on lads, lets not give them the chance to slaughter us in the press again, take a couple of spare carrier bags, if you see this sort of thing, pick it up and dispose of it safely.

I never throw away hooks any way plus i have a dog and she is normaly with me when i am down fishing.

when im out and if i find discarded hooks i tend to pick them up and discard of them when i get back home it would of devastated me if it had been one of my dogs

We all (rightly) castigate the tinsel tossers who cause havoc and devastation on our piers during the summer months. But last time I fished Horden I found two discarded traces with baited hooks still attached well above the high water mark, along with the left behind bait wrappers and empty drink bottles they went in the carrier with my own rubbish to be binned after my session was over.

There are inconsiderate areseholes on our beaches all through the year, what the answer is I don't know apart from the rest of us cleaning up after them...

Sad tale indeed. Lazy and inconsiderate idiots. I hate any form of littering, but throwing away hooks is ridiculous.

very sad news lads but unfortunatley there will always be that small minority of anglers that dont give a toss. as for me i always use bait tubs and the only hooks i disgard are usually snapped on a snag.

went fishing tonight on shields pier not that i was there long but i was there and found 3 hooks lying about after reading this thread i piked them up and threw them in the bins as i wouldnt like my dog to eat the hook, feel sorry for the bloke whos dog it was i would be devastated.

firstly those that leave discarded hooks with bait on or bare, OR ny other rubbish should be shot with shxt
but secondly if it was my dog regardless of what it cost i would have found a way to pay the vet, after all it is your best friend we are talking about, and pet insurance wouldn't break the bank.
And thirdly I question the ethics of a vet that would put a dog down that could be cured, especially with the excuse that the owner couldn't afford the bill.

with regards to rubbish fished tynemouth pier sat in a club comp the rubbish was discusting towels,rigs,bait packets ect.. few of the lads picked it up and put it in the bins provided but shouldnt have to lazy ****ing *******s springs to mind

Shocking I'm a dog owner and to say i would be devistated is an understatment !
I take dog poo bags with me when i go and any leftover bait, line or hooks go in these then in the bin back home, If i tie a new rig onto the shockleader and cut an inch off it i even take that with me, it's not like they wont have a carrier bag as everybody takes one fishing incase they catch, Morons
I thought it was just the piers but leaving hooks and line etc on the beach is way out of order
