  • Portrush/Benone beaches in Northern Ireland - advice needed please

    Hi,
I am travelling over in the next week or two and intend to fish Portrush beach and Benone Strand.
Has anyone any advice on target species, tactics, baits, traces etc which work well in the area or any advice in General.
I also would like to dig a few worm lug, rag, whites etc if there are any beds nearby so i dont have to try and keep stuff freash for days one end before using it. (i'm only there for a few days so PM me if you dont want to share your secret bait bed locations with everyone on here )

Cheers in advance for hopefully some hot tips.

    Hiya Steve
the following info might not be up to date but I fished port stewart and
benone strand a number of years ago and they are long flat beaches, very shallow and scream flats and bass when I last fished it was flat as a preverbable and we managed quite a few turbot but no bass( theres a surprise).
but when theres surf expect bars of silver the bait we used was sandeel and worm, as for bait we took our own.
sorry I can,t be of any more help.
By the way we fished over low water and half of the flood
    tight lines

its a long time since i fished northern ireland (about 20 years ago) two things i remember is:-
1 if you're fishing benone strand its usually flounders and lots of them, the bait to use is rag tipped with a sliver of macky remarkably fresh crab simply does not work on this beach as i found to my cost ! (you can also get the occasional bass and doggie here)
2 the conger fishing in portrush is fantastic even in daylight from the deep rock marks. the best fish i saw hooked was lost, a conger well in excess of 40lb !
the harbour fishes for the usual suspects cod coalies etc (mainly small) i did try fishing the harbour one evening with a big macky flapper and lost a decent conger, no one fishes for them but believe me the harbour will have a few very big conger in (big dropnet a must take accessory)
for bait we just used the local tackle shop, good worm and nice and cheap, don't know if the shops still there as i say it was a long time ago. for macky baits we just got them off the lads on the fishing boats in the harbour but obviosly that depends upon the time of year.
always promised myself a trip back to portrush this time to just target conger but never got round to it, you got me thinking now.....

Stevie i,ll be there as well mate. i reckon the fishing will be just the same as here. Unless they have Black Bream they threw me a bit a couple of years ago.
