Love my magged Saltist 20, no way I would swap it for a Fathom 15.

Depends what you want, fathom cast better, but saltists are smoother and better built

I have the fathom & a saltist bg30,think the diawa has the edge for build quality tbh

I prefer the fathom mate as it has the floating spool opposed to the fixed spindle on bg This equals to further casting

Not had it to bits in a long while but I'm almost certain my silver Saltist 20 has a floating spool. Casts like a dream as well (not got a Fathom but miles better than my old 525 Super Mag), but then again my Saltist was magged and doctored by Mart Watson...

To my knowledge all saltists are fixed spindle Stewart 👍👍👍

Aye you're right, just took mine to bits to check

Really should clean them more often, but I'm a lazy fecker and after 25 years of using and abusing them I've never had a problem with my reels yet (though I run them slow for fishing and let technique get the distance).

On the fixed vs floating spool front IMHO on a fishing reel it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. I mainly use 7HT Mags and my Saltist and I can put a bait more than plenty far enough with both. When I was field casting the increase in distance I got from switching over to a mono-magged 6500 from the 7HT Mag was minimal also (my average went up from just over 200 metres to just over 205 metres)
