  • Rod & Use of Multiplier Reel Advice?

Hi Everyone, this is my first post and I would just like some advice on a surf rod I'm looking to purchase. Only took up fishing recently, currently using a Greys GRX-S Fixed Spool rod with a Penn Surfmaster 850 reel but I’m now looking to purchase the Shimano Vengeance 13ft multiplier surf rod 4-8Oz, I have already purchased a Okuma Magnetix Casting Multiplier MG30-LS reel to go with it, the question is ~ would you recommend the Shimano rod? I was going to purchase this from Glasgow Angling Centre or is there anywhere else I could pick one up cheaper? Would I be better of purchasing an alternative multiplier rod. I’ve only used a multiplier off the boat so if you do come across a big nosed geezer on the beach having problems and basically looking like a headless chicken – it’s me. Any advice or a link to where I can pick up some useful info on how to use the reel would be great! I have purchased some Daiwa 20Lb Sensor Mono and also some Ultima Braid 30Lb (can braid be used for surf casting?), Apologies for all of the questions but I’m new to this game and even though I’m still to catch a proper fish off the beach (just some wee coley's to date) your advice on the above would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Mike

Make the switch and stick to it! Don't go for an over stiff rod imho. The okuma reels are good but the classic first time reel is an abu mag elite.
    PB Boat Ling 24lb
    PB Cod Boat 17lb
    PB Cod Shore 11lb
    PB Boat Pollack 9.5lb
    PB Mackies 1,000,000

Don't think you can use braid with a multiplier, guess someone else will confirm. As far as the Daiwa line is concerned I have used that line before and was really impressed, think mine was 18lb though. Make sure you combine it with a suitable shockleader. Good luck

the vengeance is good value . had a feel of it at bagnall and kirkwoods only thing is in my honest opinion .....u have a better rod already and a fixed spool reel that can reach 200yds clipped down (so the advert says ) why the want to change to a multiplier?? they can frap/bush u gotta learn laying the line on etc. dont gt me wrong i started on fixed spool then went on to a multiplier is use a penn 535 myself but when night fishing i tend to use a fixed spool anyway ...as long as u got a suitable shockleader fixed spool will do u ok ....braid works well on fixed spool ...learn ur knots ...and for heavens sake do not get the braid wrapped in the worng place. i would advise against using braid on a multiplier reel for surf fishing .....my two pence....on the other good luck and welcome to the very addictive world of tackle upgrade!!!!!

              Beach Boy

Don't think twice about asking any questions on the site, the guys are all too happy to help and give some great advice and ideas. As a new comer myself, only advice I can give is not to take too many big steps trying to keep up with the big boys and you will progress in knowlage and technique in time at your own pace.

Braid on a multiplier is a no/no ! dont do it, the braid will take your fingers off.

as said in my previous post, I use braid on my 6500 with no problems

suppose it depends on how confident you are using your multi

i know people who do use braid on a multiplier, but you have to be confident with your casting as one slip and you have a big mess . you also have to be carefull how you wind your line in .

i would b more confident of using braid nowadays i guess....my first few casts with braid on multiplier resulted in missing tip rings etc. to each their own i guess . but if ur new to it and on the reel he mentioned i would not ....imho thats all ....
