  • Shore Fishing cherry popped

    Hello.

I went fishing off the coast for the first time last week at Amble (off the end of the pier then a bit further south of a beach) and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself although it has raised a few questions that Im hoping the good people on here might be able to help me with.

Im not a complete novice, I did do quite a bit of coarse fishing about 15 years ago, but from what I experienced, this sea fishing lark is quite a bit more difficult as I find the size of the sea quite intimidating, its bloody huge, it must be at least 13 times the size of any lake i've fished, maybe even more

I am using a very basic 12ft beachcasting rod and reel I picked up in Aldi (I figure I can splash out a bit if I keep enjoying myself etc) and I was using rag tipped with mackerel as bait on ready made two hooked rigs with a 4oz weight (advice from the nice helpful lady in the Amble bait shop).

Firstly, is there a way to avoid introducing far more fish into the sea than we took out of it???

I got through a family meal amount of mackerel, not to mention rag in about 6 hours. I did try and copy another guy in terms of bait presentation but to no avail. Was something small eating it? Was it the lady in the Amble Bait shop in scuba gear in some dastardly plot to sell the southener the same bait back?

Secondly, bite detection, WTF??? I ended up using a version of the force with very limited results. The rod tip doesnt appear to ever stop moving when used in conjunction with the sea. This was a problem.

Thirdly, in terms of the tide, is there a good time and a bad time? Iv done a bit of research on the interweb and am slightly more baffled than I was.

Lastly, I was operating under the quite possibly barmy notion that there maybe a chance of catching something to eat. Is this a possibility? Are there rules governing what gos back, what you can keep.

Sorry to have banged on for so long, i do keep looking at internet advice/info sites but with so many conflicting opinions etc I just end up with a headache and an insatiable need to drink.

Any help would be much appreciated, the simpler the better probably. I live much closer to Alnmouth / Warkworth so any tips with that in mind would be mint.

Oh yeah, between us we caught a tiny coalie, a 20cm flattie and a garfish (i think), all went back in of course.

    Cheers

Amble Sea Angling club has a match on the river Aln tomorrow from 3.00pm to 7.00pm.
You're more than welcome to come along and see how the experts do it ! Actually, "experts" may be stretching things a bit far, but if you fancy it, just come along . You're sure to pick up some usefull tips, and we are a friendly bunch, nothing too serious in the summer time !

Just park up after the bridge, and follow the path down the river side, and ask any of the reprobates there for Tony. I'll be knocking about somewhere.

Just bring some rag and mackie for bait.

you only need small baits, half a decent size ragowrm or a full small one. tiped off with abit of mackerel a little bigger than a finger nail...

This will definitely help - I was using lumps of mackerel the size of a finger never mind fingernail.

The rod tip bouncing up and down would be down to crabs attacking your bait, thats where it went. Not much you can do about it except keep rebaiting
