Hi everyone. This report sees me back from a trip away and thankfully with a month of leave.
Last weekend Kieth and I decided to give a mark a bash that has not produced for us this year! The marks are in Browns Bay, Cullercoats. They are The Crawleys and also The Chair.
We have been fishing a number of marks that are local to us, in the hope of proving that they can produce during scratching season and the Summer, after being told that they don't, except during the Winter.
The marks mentioned above are extremely heavy, the heaviest we have fished! The divers dive there and report deep gulleys and overhangs.
I have looked at the lie of the land and what belongs there naturally! The water has a lot of movement in it even when calm and these factors lead me to believe that there is the chance of a decent fish in this area.
We fished it last weekend without even a knock. On starting to pack up we wittnesed a trio arrive and one of these gentleman pulled in a red codling. This dashed my recently established conclusion and so I decided to fish it again.
We did exactly that yesterday. We fished the tide two hours up and over high water. HW was at approximately 1834hrs at just over 4m. The wind was blowing a slight Westerly. There was a litlle movement in the water combined with the surges created by the make - up of this mark.
My first cast, using rag and frozen crab produced a red codling. A point to note is that this was produced during the same tidal state as we had wittnessed the previous weekend.
The ground is that heavy there that it can become quite disheartening, and I don't mind losing gear!
I would seriously consider using old nuts instead of a lead and possibly increasing the pounds in your line right through!
I have now seen The Chair produce two red codling over a similar tide but I still believe it has more to offer!
We plan to fish it again under the cover of darkness to see if we can produce more for our loss!
We have found that our local marks have produced at night but rarely during daylight.
We decided to move to another mark in order to fish it two hours down and over LW. LW was at approximately 0030hrs at just over 1m. This was a local beach mark that has produced for us previously a number of months ago! We were interested to see how the size of the species differed to those produced previously!
I had a lovely knock that bounced the Century Tip Tornado around in the stand. This produced a pristine codling of about a pound. Kieth was straight into the Bass, which we expected, unlike the Codling. The Codling and Bass were a bit healthier size wise and this was great to see! It will be interesting to see how long the Bass stay throughout the year and how there size continues to increase. I also produced two small Coalies. Kieth produced the two Bass mentioned, two Coalies and another pristine codling.
I will not disclose this mark due to the Bass but it is one of several marks along that beach and we are hopeful of great things there this Winter!!
I have included some of the better pis from the IPhone.
