Roker Pier, Knocked out with 5oz sinker!

I fished the pier yesterday & was given a fold up lobster pot, was talking to the fella who gave me it (saying thankyou etc).

His son was casting out & instead of an over the shoulder cast he put a bit power into it & swung it round to his right, catching his dad on the side of the head/face hitting him on the soft bit just infront of his ear, it was a 5oz weight aswell!

The poor bloke hit the floor & was out cold for a few seconds, people heard the weight hit him from about 20 to 30ft down the pier it was that hard, when he came round he was bleeding from a cut & still dizzy (didnt know where he was etc).

We called an ambulance & they asked to speak to him, after a few mins on the phone he told them he felt ok & would drive to the walk in clinic, we tried to get him to go for the ambulance option but there is only so much you can do...

His son was shaken up, crying etc (12 yr old'ish) & he had another younger child with him also shaken up, i told them to take him to the Roker Resort Office before driving home to get cleaned up etc.

The joys of the mackerel season, lucky the daylites didnt hook him or that the kid wasnt using a spinner, hope he's ok & got sorted!

another reason to hate makrel season there is leads flying all over and none of them seem to say watch your head. im always looking over my should then getting on my knees when i see someone casting. there is no room on the round end on roker pier for getting power into the cast aswell thats just asking for trouble hope the guy recovers well.

why i only fish it after the mackerel bashers have left plenty room and more aless peace and quiet hope the bloke is ok

well i would keep away from that boy if he had all that room n still hit him on the head i would be standing well behind him, i normally stand behind the people who i think are a danger. iv been goin fishing around 6 or 7 oclock lately and stayin till about 1 so theres no makrel fishers about.

More accidents at Roker today. A boy walked behind one of his fishing group and got a head full of feathers.

To be fair to the caster he did check behind him before hand, but the boy walked straight in to them as he went to cast.

The only time I don't take my first aid kit and it's needed, all I had were some plasters and I thought they may take offence if I offered them.

He must have been fine as he returned about an hour and a half later minus the feathers, so all's well that ends well.


I'm just a bit worried that these things happen in three's.................I'm of to the loft to see if my helmet is up there before my next visit.

A bit off topic but that made me buckle. I was reading through the post and i was thinking god, hope hes okay then read "a head full of feathers" and thought the same then buckled at plasters lol.

They may of taken offence but if I was the feather headed guy then I would of buckled while I was in pain.

This year has had to be the worst for kids running round the end of the pier, getting pestered by the "Ere mate have yer got any weights, bait, feathers etc that i can lend?" brigade & all the mess on the pier...

Hope the kid was alright.

Some peeps are just dangerous, i was on blyth pier last week and an older bloke was casting as hard as he could with a full set of feathers, looked like 20lb line if that straight through on a big rod, no suprise he cracked off, wot a danger. And some youngin who was before every cast waving a spinner on my mates nose he wasnt even looking, i telt him like. Also if you know who you are (the older bloke) dont keep undersize coalies, i told you that they had to be 35cm doesnt matter if they are only for "pot bait" ****es me off i wont fish there in the summer during the day again, full of plumbs!

Same on shields pier last week, a foreign fella fishing halfway up had 7 tiny coalies all laid out & looked proud as punch, yesterday an old man on Roker had the same but were about 9 tiny coalies, all on show as if they were something to be proud of!
