Whilst fishing off a pier on the isle of wight a few years ago they were catching them for fun there, as previous posts using makerel strip under a float, not sure what hooks etc, mind you its a different world down there loads of different species to target

i,ve caught quite a few garfish and all with a contoller float cast out and then retrieved back mainly steadily so the bait is in the top foot or so. bait used was a smallish ragworm. they seem to like disturbance on the water when the float is jerked also.

              garfish

The hot summer of 1976 saw lots of garfish off Shields pier, caught a few myself. I hav'nt seen any since, they were caught on spinners while targeting mackerel.

                Garfish.

When i fished my first Police Boat compo it was at Weymouth . We went out off Chesil beach as part of the day species hunting. Guys were pulling up black Bream and the odd Pollack. Skipper says to me is anyone going to try for Garfish. By now we had anchored off some rocky cliffs round the corner from the beach. We were only allowed to use three hooks so i cut down a six hook shrimp rig with very small hooks and put on small strips of mackeral. I had a float (thanks to the advice of some local anglers the day before) cast it out and let it run expecting nowt then bang.I had a hell of a bite and started to reel in----lost it then got either another or the same one. Bang 10 points for a new species of fish-i was over the moon. And them Garfish fight like stink for their size..
Heres a pic--note the NESA badge.

I,m not aware of any Garfish caught local.

                mICK.

you can buy he shrimp rigs for peanuts.
5 Hook Living Shrimp Lures size 6 Mackeral/Bait x1 on eBay (end time 20-Jul-10 10:12:40 BST)
stick em on a long trace from the float without wieghts and let it drift subsurface. I would use 3 by cutting in half and hook up some this strips of mackeral belly. This is what i did.
