  • sand weel

was on shields pier the day mainly bait fishing, ( only small coli and flatties taken till 6.30,( no macki about for second day running.

was talking too one guy and he said it was illegal to take sand eel now, is this true ? . can any one confirm this, if true does this mean shops wiil not be allowed to sell sand eel and use it for bait or is it just the ordinary that we are not allowed to take

Sand Eel are not directly related to true Eels so I would imagine they do not have the same legal protection as Eels. I am not aware of any ban on catching them. Very popular bait so I reckon there would be a few upset anglers on here.

totally unprotected and have no quotas. think the figure for last years was around 1.5million tons taken from the north sea, mainly for farmed salmon & trout feed & fertilizer, some also goes to fire the power stations in denmark!

commercial sand eels fisheries have had a huge impact right through the food chain, from fish to birds

Is sandeel not just a common name for a number of fish in the sand lance or launce family ?
