You don't need big hooks - 1/0 or 2/0 will do just fine.

Don't use a pennel rig, a single hook is all you need and a pennel risks damaging the fish more than you need to

Use a paternoster rather than a pulley - Smuts hit the bait hard and my experience is that you get more hook ups with a paternoster

Crab and rag best baits, you are pretty much wasting your time using fish baits for Smuts (though the odd one comes to squid)

Loosen off your drag and don't stray too far from your rod. A double figure smut will have your rod out of the tripod and into the sea before you know what's hit you. Even a 6/7lber will have your rod right over

If you get one get your bait straight back out into the water. Smuts are a pack fish that can move through an area very quickly. I once had three Smuts on the same bit of crab hoyed straight back out after unhooking each one

        Have fun and good luck

Had my pb smut on rag (just a tiddler really at a shade under 11lb) and probably had as many on it as I have had on crab. Tip it off with a sliver of squid...

Think stewarts got it all covered there bud, good advice given stewart....
Lot's of ppl will argue use a pennel, because they get most of there fish on the top hook,me personally I never use a pennel, just a single 2/0,I think it minimises the risk of deep hooking,an causes the min amount of stress/damage to the fish, most of the time my single 2/0 big dog is hooked firmly in the bttm jaw...Same with ray's,I use a single big dog for all my fish bait/crab fishing...Been qt a lot of hounds caught nr me on squid, but it's the crab that'll do the bizz for your imo....Like stewart say's don't leave your rod unattended,or it'll go in...
                  Happy hound hunting...
