  • mackeral at last

    Hi Lads

According to another site, mackeral were being caught in numbers, from the Steetley Pier(Hartlepool) 28/05/2010.
Lets hope it's an improvement on last year!

"At last" its still a couple weeks sooner than most years.

The amount that are being taken from boats and shore every year we will need a 2 year ban on them again soon..i watched a program where a boat took over 300,000 mackerel in one 3 day trip at sea then that program on that new super trawler that wiped a shoal out in one net.

            Mackerel

Was that a complete ban Richy ? Were the pleasure anglers except are including in the ban. Wouldn't do the Ling fishing much good no fresh Mackeral baits though the Ling may think differently.

Complete ban if i remember from landing mackerel at a port, few used for bait thou and still able to catch them from the shore.

I said it many a time, i would be happy to have a coupel year ban on all species as long as you could still go out and catch and release. Apart from the odd macka for bait and 1 codling to take home, all my catch goes back anyway.

                Mackerel

Can't or don't want to imagine a sea void of Mackerel but you can see it coming as clearly as you see that bad weather heading for you when out at sea. Mackerel is the only fish I take home for myself to eat the Cod & Ling are filleted/skinned and giving to friends & family

In the boom days of herring fishing people would of laughed if you said they'd just about disappear from our shores look what happened.
                  Cheers, Keith.

Yer herring just wiped out, only port i know still trading on our coast in herring is Seahouses, looking back over 11 years of shore and boat records i have caught a grant total of 17 herring, yes 17 that is almost only 1 a year.

As you say people used to laugh at the idea of no more herring, soon it will be mackerel, i always feel bad when i gut a mackerel and its full of eges and at this time of year 9 out of 10 mackerel or big females full of spawn.

another mark gone ,what next .
before to long there wont be the like of mackerel from the shore as the piers and jetties will be closed because of the dipsticks that ruin everything for average joe,the fishing itself is only going to get worse with the bigger trawlers taking more each time they throw a net out.seems the minority are winning over the majority
