Hi, ive not been fishing before and am keen to catch mackerel, without a boat and near Newcastle. any advice on places to fish, kit required and detailed advice on how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated. Also, it would be great if someone was prepared to meet up with me to show me the ropes.

Pop into your local tackle shop. You will get all the advice you need in person and at least then you can see the type of things people are talking about and they will show you how to use them aswell."In order to becomes old and wise, first you must be young and stupid."

A lot of folk like to use a carp or pike rod with 2 daylights and a spinner on the end for a weight others just use a light spinning rod and a spinner or try a sliding float set up on a 10ft spinning rod with 12lb main line use mackerel strip as bait on a size1 hook set your bait depth at around 10-12 ft.

Keep things light and simple and you'll have some good sport unlike when you use heavy set up with string of feathers or daylights. As for places to fish South Shields, Roker and Blyth piers are probably best in the early mornings or evenings the down side is they get busy

As Bushwacker said, a walk along on of the piers will show you everything you need to know, but also a lot of bad practices lol
When they are feeding they'll pretty much take anything that moves and catches the light. Light set-up with a spinner can be great fun. As can float fishing if you find a spot where other 'anglers' will not cast straight over your gear...! I don't quite get the mentality of some people chucking a string of six daylights and 4oz lead with a beachcaster. These are the guys that run along the pier to stand on your toes and cast over you if you get one.
Good luck. Have fun and try not to be put off by the numpties. Although this can give a good bit of sport, you shouldn't judge fishing on this experience._________________________________

that's the trouble with the piers its always full of knackers with their bag of cans and not giving a **** about safety of others all you get is bad language a load of mess and dead fish been wasted so my advice would be to try some rock marks up Northumberland like craster some nice deep rock marks with plenty of mackerel and great scenery as said in in one of the posts all you need is a nice light spinning rod 4000 type spinning reel some metal spinners and your away as easy as that if you pm me your more than welcome to call where I live and I will show you all you need to know kit etc to get you started and confident

You cant really go wrong in July time on a nice flat day fishing for mack, advice as above will catch you plenty.
If your ever further south in July/August (Hartlepool area) your free to join me in a macky session, I usually just go to my local beach at Horden and catch about 20 that does me all winter for bait.Best shore catch 2016 - 7.5lb cod, Seaton Carew!

Where are the good marks for makkie around Craster mate? Anywhere along the rocks from Cullernose? Like you I can't be arsed with all the scrotes that turn up for the makkie on the piers so am looking for some quiter marks where i can fish with light gear with my eldest bairn with a dec ent chance of getting some fish.
Cheers
