my son and i have done a little bit of sea fishing in the past but really want to come across to fish for Mackerel this summer. We did really well in Mousehole in Cornwall last year off the harbour wall.
We've been told that fishing off one of the boats is a must at some point but could you point us in the best direction for fishing from the shore for Mackerel and a pointer as to the rig and bait? In the past we used feathers with great success. Also, what's this about potatoes?!
I look forward to hearing from you and maybe we'll bump into you in the summer if it ever arrives.

Personally i like a sliding float set up on a 10ft spinning rod with 12lb main line, a lot of folk like to use a carp or pike rod of around the same length with 2 daylights and a spinner on the end for a weight others just use a light spinning rod and a spinner.Keep things light and simple and you'll have some good sport unlike when you use heavy set up with string of feather/daylights. As for places to fish it depends where your from as to which is the closest to you but one thing you will always find is that it gets busy especially on the piers

Day lights are the name/type of lure/attractor m8(I believe lol)not my type of fishing,as dwn here the macky rarely come in close enuff for you to catch e'm off the beach,mainly off the boats in my neck of the woods.Great friendly ppl on here buddy,they'll help you I'm sure,good luck ted n tim...

Very simple to fish for macky mate and theres plenty for you here during the summer months - on a decent day in July / August any of the north east piers will give you a good day.

Just a basic set up of a light spinning rod / reel will be good fun with your feather trace. For mackerel I personally go for a "sea flec" rig with a 3oz lead or even a "zenith spinner" on the end.
Many times that set up has produced 5 macks at a time for me.

You cant really go wrong though with macky, they will go for anything - even plain hooks. Those "sea flec" rigs I mentioned tend to get destroyed after a dozen macky but then they just take the plain hooks - anything shiny so don’t worry about getting all the right gear for this fish

You usually need a flat, clear sea too. Keep your eye on the various coastal webcams in the days preceding your trip. If the sea gets rough it will become cloudy and you will struggle to catch.

Hi lumpylegs,from your post I see you live in Cumbria. Have you tried fishing for mackerel in Cumbria yet ? I have never fished there before but here is a link to check out. Maryport seems to give you a reasonable chance.

Plenty mackerel to be caught in Cumbria. I wouldn't bother with the drive over here to catch them.
