alan i am writing in english. most people write like me today. its just a lot fast for me cos im no good on a keyboard. i think there is nothing wrong with it. you write the way you do and i write my way. i will try and write in what you call english from now on to keep every one happy

regarding "jumbled garbage" i think its worth noting that not everyone has had the benefit of good education.many are brought up on abbreviated words used in text many have had to suffer teachers who were only interested in their long holidays,and not ensuring their pupils reached a standard of reasonable education.finally,i think its a disgrace that any one should be taken to task publicly for what they have written we have all got different capabilities in the things we have to do in life. for example,i know nothing about potatoe forks!!!!!

Indeed the pass rate at GCSE level (the equivelant of O level for us older characters) has risen from 15% in the times of Grammar Schools to over 60% now. Does that imply that members of our society are better at writing or worse?

- I take your point about long holidays....trouble is teachers are interested in the quality of their students' exam results BECAUSE THEIR PAY NOW DEPENDS ON IT. That's why you'll see teachers, who get paid for 205 days a year, which equates to 1265 hours, contractually, regularly in school at 8.00 and still there at 6.00 at night.

- finally I agree with your point that some students have been brought up on text speak.....usually those who are on their phones at the back of the class, planning their next fight or abusing others on MSN or Facebook.

Good spelling and grammar takes no more effort than a dictionary or spellcheck. Problem is we've lost the will to make ourselves understood in proper English, a position continually undermined by our political leaders who've made the passing of English (Language or
Literature) such a student bias test that to now punish poor writing would be an admission of failure. I don't criticise anth123...I rarely criticise anyone but to have a pop at teachers for something that is a social ill is a bit below the belt.

Oh and potato only has an "e" in the plural.

Take no notice Anth, this forum is for fishermen and women . ...end of.. If people want help to better their sport then, no matter how they convey their thoughts and questions to the forum , it's up to all the members to treat those questions with some respect. If questions take a bit to decipher then so be it, if you dont want to help or cant be bothered that's ok just leave it alone, but as someone earlier said we are all different. But we all have one thing in common.

ant - you miss the point. I fish with all sorts and treat all of them with a level of respect, dependent on their ability to fish, nothing else. I also don't care a jot whether you write up your reports in text speak or Chinese - that's up to you. My criticism was aimed at lingking who blamed the decline in standards of education at the door of teachers and that is simply wrong.
To get back to the thread...would you believe I don't think I've dug a worm with a fork or spade since I was a teenager. Almost every worm I get is scratched from the hard somewhere.

i try to take no notice and not let it get to me but it does topfly.all i done is post a thread on this forum asking a question the next thing people have come on and had a pop at me about writing in text and my spelling. whats a man to do but stick up for his self like i have said its not nice when people do thing like that but thats the world we live in today

Lingking has it spot on except for one thing, you cant blame teachers for trying to give each pupil 100% of their time, i myself have a class of 33 pupils and although i try to make each one special i cannot physically do it, i wont go into the politics of it but believe me it is a very hard job.

i don't think it matters how you write your post as long as you get your message across, my daughter has a A*in English and is quite capable of writing in grammatically correct English but always text me in text English. which as anth said most young people use. Alan if you look at normal written English you will find a lot of abbreviations in it also, i.e[for one],I'm,I've haven't, can,t ,asap, etc, etc.
