  • Shileds pier closed to fisherman

Well i may have missed this in the past as not been following threads in the shore section but i was shocked to find PORT OF TYNE PRIVATE NO FISHING signs up along the pier with CCTV in operation.

Whats that all about...if they shut Shields to anglers its a massive hit for our area and will just cause more problems..its been comming because we are a right dirty bunch (25% of us anyway)

Anyway anyone got any more info on this? it even states no wheel chairs now also.

I believe the sign-age that is fixed to the gates show so called anglers standing on the wall of the pier and this is what the Port of Tyne is explaining to the inexperienced anglers among us.
No standing on the wall when fishing.

            s s pier

a mate and i and another lad once had to go to court as witnesses in a shooting incident that happened on a boat just off south shields pier about ten year ago. when we were interviewed by the police, he asked if we had permission to fish the pier off captain wilson who was at that time in charge of the pier , and told them that no one had permission to fish the pier that day. on the day of the hearing the said captain wilson also asked us if we had permisson, we politletly told him no, as we didnt know we needed permission. he then he told us that anyone who wishes to fish the pier should ask for permission. But as we all no no-one asks for permission and the port of tyne turn a blind eye.
As for the signs that are up they have been there since beore the new year, and they are there to cover the port of tyne in case there is any accidents. if any angler were to have an accident then the port of tyne would not be liable because there are visible signs saying no angling and no cycling.

As from the beginning of May when the pier bloke shuts the gate on an evening, which could be as late as 9pm, he will be asking all anglers and anyone else to leave the pier. and once everyone is off past the gate, it is up to those if they go back on, again it is probably to cover the port of tyne. The pier bloke told me this today and asked me to pass it on.

there was a woman who rode her bike off the pier, just before the 1st gate a few years ago
the court case went to the high courts in london, she didnt get a penny
because there are signs saying no cycling along pier
the port still had to send 2 employees down to london aswell as pay for a barrister
maybe thats why the signs are up

This sign has been up for a few years now, and I've often wondered the eligibility when it comes to the Shields open? I mean "rules are rules" and if it states "no fishing to the public" then I really think the Shields club committee ought to look into this.

They are brand new signs only put up in the last 2 months would say at least 4ft by 2 ft in size...one on the gates and one at the car park and 1 at the start of the pier walk next to the gate house hut.

States in big writing no fishing private pier, cctv in operation.

                      shields pier

the signs were put up bout the end of last summer as the old ones were a bit past it and needed renewing , there has always been a no cycling and no fishing signs on pier to cover port of tyne as they have never stopped the fishing in the past except when weather been rough, so nowt's changed except for the signs so carry on fishing and enjoy and help keep the pier clean, now there's bins along the pier to use

Keith also keeps in touch with the Tynemouth and S/S yacht clubs to avoid their sailing comps, (top man). thanks for clearing that up graham, Ritchie was just trying to give us the "heads up".

Thank you for the comments Graham and Jim and in reference to what Tony quoted, I do get in touch with the harbour master about a month before our open competition and ask for the Port of Tyne,s permission to fish our open comp and I send a copy of our public liability insurance to the harbour master himself. with the permission of the harbour master and the Port of Tyne authorities we are ( weather permitted ) allowed to fish the pier in our open comp.

Wow chaps, I didn't know there was such "politics" involved in organizing the Shields open, and I agree the lads do a great job.
