Every single year at this time i think spring run salmon.
Now i have never ever caught a salmon or even knowingly fished for them, i have not a clue where to start with this.
Does the spring run exist worth the try, or do you blink and miss it all.
What tackle set up do you run. for salmon on bait from the shore.
Do i fish bass weight gear or normal british beachcaster rods and reels.
What rigs work best and where /how do salmon hunt/ feed.
I guess gulleys will be favourate places to cast to, but that is just my guess, i know zero on this subject.
Any care to give advice from experience on salmon on bait from the shore. Because i need it.

you have to have a licence to fish for salmon, about £80 for a year and that is to catch them from the river, dont know if you are allowed to catch them from the shore .

im guessing the first thing you will need to fish for them is a salmon license available from the post office

a couple of years ago i was fishing for mackerel off the steetly in june and thier was an old bloke fishing next to me and we where hammering the fish using bog standard lead lures ,all of a sudden his spinning rod just bent double, he said to me what the //// have i got on here it's goining like a steam train, there was only a few of us on the pier but we all knew this fish was no mackerel, i told him to release his drag on his fixed spool and let the fish run, it took him 20 or so minutes to get the fish close to the pier it just kept on running, it put up a fantastic fight, when i looked at it in the water i knew it was wild north atlantic salmon, any way i mannaged to lift it for him and land it on the pier, it wieght was just over 8. 1/2 lbs ,fish of a life time ,so the answer to your question is if you want to catch a salmon in the sea bog standard mackerel lures will do the trick ,but it's very very rare to catch one.

                  a little dodgey but

not to sure on this, but, Im sure if you catch a salmon you have to put it back,No questions,BUT & this is a big BUT, if it happens to float to the the top,& someone else happens to see it floating on the sea ,they can go in & get it, dont hold me to this-but Im dam sure this is right, orif your dog happens to be about & it jumps in , comes back with a dead salmon in its mouth its Ok, same with Game Birds, if you hit a Pheseant with the the car you cant stop & piock it up, Its classed as poaching, but the driver bahind you can stop & pick it. up cos its classed as road kill,, CHECK it out,,,, im only 99% sure Im right,

I Salmon fish every year on the Coquet & the Tyne & have done for many years.
You cannot fish for Salmon & Seatrout without a current migratory fish rod licence.
All Salmon caught before the 16th June must be returned (live or dead).

As for taking a salmon from the water that has been returned & died, that's a big NO also.
Unless the fish has been caught fairly (in the mouth) with rod & line, taking any migratory fish by any other means is classed as poaching (live or dead).

Hope this clears it up for you.

You also need an EA license to fish for Salmon and Seatrout up to 6 miles out to sea....

thank for that, dont know were I picked that Info from, brob about 20 years ago, although why just salmon & sea trout? Im sure I can come up with a few more migatory fish, give me a few hours and Ill come up with some more,Is it because they return to a river to spawn, or do they just want you to buy a license??

Eels, now I know we wont catch most of these fish off Whitley Bay,appart from Eels, not to sure why a rod caught salmon and or sea trout , off the coast... not river, can,not be kept, or is it just the rules,??

essentially, despite the fact they are happily splashing about in the sea, they are 'owned' by someone

You can catch Salmon on the Wear. I have seen lads fishing by the sewerage treatment plant at Chetser-Le-St. They use shrimp and ledger on the bottom and let it bounce along. I have also seen lads spinning for them from Durham City as well.
Also when on duty one early day after nights i went down to the river at Durham by the passport office and i caught a lad with his spinning rod and flying spinner. He was,nt fishing at the time so he got a warning. He had no licence. There are signs everywhere around here saying you cannot fish.
The river there has a salmon counter and if you look at the concrete where the waterfalls are you will see channels for the fish to get up.
I am sure the post office do a one day licence and you can get a one day fishing ticket from Eddies angling shop in Ch-Le-St. Its over the road from the TA Centre in Chester-Le-St.
I have to say i often patrol the riverside at Chester and have yet to see a salmon.
