Craster

I'm going to be spending a few days there shortly and I'd be mad not to take my rods...but I don't know much about the area other than it's very rocky! I read on here about Dunstanburgh Castle being a good mark but what about the mile or so of rocks between there and Craster?

Any tips on tackle/rigs/bait would be very helpful. I fancy doing a bit of lure fishing but will also take by beachcaster and carp rods. What could I expect to catch at this time of year? Is it too early for float fishing? Is the area good for lure fishing?

Loads of questions I know but any help would be appreciated, cheers. Gaz.

I've only ever fished in the depths of winter there as there are some cracking codling marks south of Craster down to a place called the Doctors House.

The ground is very rough - plenty of boulders and if you're south of Cullernose Point plenty of kelp. In summer that area can give up some kelpies but I'd go further north for them, around Seahouses up to Eyemouth. I fish it with 80lb braid straight through and lose less than with mono and shockers.

Others can comment on the lure fishing around there as I've not done it. Seem plenty doing so though when walking the coastal path.

You can fish from the north side of the harbour all the way upto the castle its kelp,kelp and more kelp best to fish it last 2 3/4 of the ebb first of the flood on medium to big tides its at its best when the seas flat and the water is clear.I use 35-40lb main line with 60lb snoods and 4/0 or 6/0 mustard vikings with crab being the prime bait.

South side of the harbur is similar upto the end of the houses then once you pass them from there to cullernose you can fish most stages of the tide but to be honest I think north of the harbour is better.

I don't normally lure fish but you could try the castle or just befor you go through the gate to the castle there's a deep point to the right, there's also cullernose point.

Over the last 25-30 years I've had some good bags of codling from the north side of the harbour from early may onwards when the weathers settled useing fresh crab, a good starting point is straight down from the last house as you head towards the castle casting towards the corner of the island and don't be afraid to try lobbing it 30-40 yd as the fish tend to be just behind the kelp

Cheers lads very informative! Sounds like I need some stronger gear. Might try a rotten bottom rig with some old spark plugs I have. I'll give the lure fishing a go while I'm there as well. Gaz.

not being funny gaz,why not use POTATOES,for leads.some members actually use them.ps,good luck with your sessions.im sure a member could put up a thread where the anglers are using chips oops,i mean POTATOES.lol.

If you go to dustanburgh it can be quite a walk depending on where you park so leave the sack of spuds at home for that mark maybe haha
