Morning Gents,First season fishing ,had a very enjoyable season with some canny fish only problem is im having withdrawl symptoms now ,basically like to hunt for the pot so the flatty thing doesnt really float my boat if you know what i mean ,been hearing the phrase "spring run" what exactly does it mean? When roughly does it start?
thanks
we used to get a canny spring of run of codling in the tyne when the 1st of the peeler crabs started but this doesn't seem to happen anymore, draw your own conclusions on that
I have had some canny shore caught summer cod sessions on our coastline, granted it been few years since i tried.Think if you get some fresh crab and get out on the right marks its probably still possible.Used to do canny around May time newbiggin area.

I started fishing again last summer alot of it at St.Marys lighthouse, had quite a few small codling, the biggest about 3.5lb,during the winter months i can count on one hand the amound of codling ive caught,so ill be still fishing for cod during the summer
The only fish i want this year is a double figured cod!!!
the spring run ended about twenty year ago and has not been seen since. You could fill your box at one time fishing in the Tyne during spring, most lads kept a few and put the rest back. If you get one please let me know.

am 26 and i can remember doing pretty well in my early teens alan
I remember the spring runs late eighties about end of march time, used to get loads of coling between 1lb and 2lb.bait crab, rag and mussel.
In them days you did not have to spend a fortune on bait, couple stone of mussel collected from the pipes on seaburn beach couple of hours at sand point collecting rag and crab, bigger tides go to whitburn beach for the big king rag.
Alot has changed for sea angling in the past 20 years, what will it be like 20 years from now.
used to get a good spring run on the colliery beaches when the pits were working downhill on these beaches now, i can remember getting 30 cod to 6lb one easter weekend.
the tyne is best place now fresh or frozen crab, i prefer ice house area north shields good cast required and ground is a bit rough.
a;so had some good bags church point newbiggen area mid april frozen crab.
best place that i know of is the holderness coast it fishes realy well next few month for codling and its started already just read reports on holderness coast fishing forum.
still quite a few codling to be expected round here yet but if you pack in early you wont find out.
ragworm which i dont particulary like brings some suprising catches of codling also this time of the year like the beginning of the winters fishing.
