just watched end of the line it really has made me feel sad to see our greed, and our total disregard for our marine environment, no wonder there is no fish left anywhere.

well done on putting back 90% of your catch, i also put back most of my catch only keep codling if it is about 3lb.
I was on roker pier last monday and one fishermen had codling in his bag which were only about 10inches long, ( i nearly said something to him.)
trawlers gill netters and long linners are all to blame for the lack of fish in our seas.

Fully understand where your coming from Danny about the trawlers etc but when you also mention the "fisherman" with a 10" codling in his bag then we dont really have a case to say "its not us its them"
Im as guilty as the next man, i fish for a club and pretty much everything above leagal size is weighed in, most of the members put the flatties and eels back, and harra with the rockling of course. We're all guilty to some degree

is it us ?? doubt it
watched it last night- just a few daft questions, look at catch reports on this site, does any one have the total weight of fish caught by lads & lasses that fish &report their catches , or fish weigh onthis site, there was 15,000,000 tonnes thats million of just- thats just blue fin tuna caught in nets ect last year. ,thers enough fishing line layed out to go around the world 550 times, some or the nets mouths are able to swallow 13, boeing 747 in one gulp. I think what we catch, as in off the beach/small boat off the North East coast is nowt to what the trawlers catch,I would allmost guess they loose more fish to the gulls & gannets that follow the nets than we catch, so Im not to worried about taking the odd 3lb cod for the table, when these guys are landing 3,000lbs of fish in one scoop,BUT its all worth thinking about.Tich

In terms of Long Lines, they are a hell of a lot less damaging than nets, as obviously they are much more selective in what they catch.
I watched a programme called 'Alaskan Fishing Wars' the other night and they were long lining for halibut and Black Cod (sablefish), and although these boats pulled in thousands of pounds of fish on their sets, the fishery is sustainable because every boat has a quota, and the quota limits that are set are based on the scientific advice, and are set well below the sustainable level, so that there will always be a fishery, whereas our limits are set by the CFP, which ignores the scientific advice, and always ends up way above the recruitment and reproduction levels of the fish they catch.
The only bycatch in this fishery was a fish that was only worth $1 per pound, but those fish were still used, whereas trawled bycatch is discarded back over the side, which includes, many sharks, turtles, cetaceans....in fact the whole ecosystem.
These long liners also had to set lines back from the stern of the boat, with bird scaring devices to protect the sea birds that used to go for the baited hooks, and these guys didn't mind having some of their sets damaged by oportunist sperm whales, as they marvelled at the mammals and simply moved on when they lost a few fish!"And I looked, and behold'a pale horse; and his name that sat on him was death, and hell followed with hi, and power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with hunger, and with the beasts of the earth"
