Sorry if this seems to be a crusade, but I feel there is enough feeling out there to carry it forward a tadge further.
Reply from Arthur Cranson . He is willing to help and advise.
This is not a shot against people making their living from fishing, only against indiscrimitive shooting of inshore gill nets.

Thank you David, that would good. I predominantly deal with South East Northumberland, but I can get anything coastal related to the correct people to deal with. I will also be following up on the netting at "Meggies Burn" with the environment agency.

    Hi Arthur.

The time in question was Feb this year, and there was no boat in attendance, so my guess is it was a net. Follow this link,http://www.nesa.co.uk/forums/shore-f...e-netters.html

If it's OK with you, I would like to post your contact details on a local sea angling internet forum, because as you say 79 miles of coast line is a lot to patrol, with local sea anglers, they may help to share to load.

    hi David,

When were these nets shot off "Meggies Burn"? there have been some set lines of baited hooks set in that area over a couple of tides this winter. During the summer months, the Licensed Salmon netters can actually anchor their net on the beach at one end, though they must be in attendance, as a Salmon net is a top set net, the top line floating on the surface. these nets should never be left unattended by the licence holder. If you do witness a net being left, please contact me immediately and I will deal with them. No net should be indiscriminately set, especially very close in, these are probably illegal Salmon poachers and need to be reported to the environment agency on: 0800 807060 as a poaching incident, and they will deal with the net and its owners through the courts.

I do understand your concerns for water user safety, but with 79 miles of coastline in Northumberland I would hope there is room for everyone.

    Regards

    Arthur

Eight out of ten of them are not 'making a living out of fishing' as you put it.

They are 'signing on' and 'working'!

Do we think they use the fish for their own consumption?

Or do they perhaps 'give them away to needy causes'

    More controversy, maybe?

I had a meeting with the Chief Executive and Chief Fishery officer of the Northumberland Sea Fisheries Committee today at their base in Cramlington. Subject, inshore netting as posted on this and other forums, as a result they will be publishing a statement on there website and taking hard copy to tackle shops and clubs, this is to explain there position and current byelaws it is somewhat complex and mainly to protect Salmon fishing. I will update you when I get a copy.
I have also asked to for an open meeting in the future for a question and answer session and also to explain the New Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Organisation (IFCA) along with the new Marine enforcement officers powers and role in the future of RSA in Northumberland. I hope that this will take place in Newbiggin like the last open meeting, unless you have any better suggestion it seems central for Northumberland They agreed to this in principal at a time when they have more knowledge of the new IFCA and the impact it will have on Northumberland, probably late Summer. Their next meeting is in April I will get the date, these are open to the public Waldorf.
