  • Strange fish

Fishing river Tyne at Hebburn marina as we speak, there has jus been a fish of about 5-6lb swimming along the edge if the river, it looked brown with white/yellow head and tail, everytime I put a line out infront of it it just changed direction and carried on it's way slowly. Nothing caught as yet but will update if anything later.

Sounds like a sea-trout Baggott, probably too small for a salmon Kelt.
These are fish that have spawned and are making their way back to the sea (if they are lucky).

Watch-out, they are foul to eat

fishing brighams on 2 occasions last year i seen something like you describe, the mark on head i thought was white and i thought it might be a wound as water was very murky at the and bout 20 yards away so not have a clear look, and like you say swimming edge of wall and very slow and big enough to be bout 5lbs + , when i mentioned it about, some say maybe a mullet. also talked to a couple of othr lads who seen it at brighams

Aye, when they have spawned they are wide open to infection and fungal attack.

The 'white mark ' on the head which you describe could well be a crust of fungus.

The white patches on these fish are caused by a disease called UDN (Ulcerative dermal necrosis)

I see loads every year as I am an avid Salmon angler as well as shore angling.

A baggot is a fish that has entered the river system but has failed to spawn (cock or hen) & a Kelt is a fish that has spawned and is heading back to sea.
