Codseeker's nailed it - don't give up, just get better. The same guys win the comps or at least finish in the top few all the time - that's cos they really know what they're doing. Fishing is only partly about luck. But, having said that, maybe you just need a rest.
You are not making a mistake but you just need a break. I have been fishing for 40 odd years
mainly in Scotland and South coast came to live up here in 1988 fished for a few years and gave up for about 12 years because of disapointment at results. Mate persuaded me to start again last year. still crap results but enthusiasm back and enjoying it all again.
Tbo mate i packed in sea fishing in jan 04,used to fish in the winter from beadnell to seaton sluice.The best fishing i had was from cambois hot pipe for a good few yrs.I was never the best fisherman though,with a pb cod of 10lb 10oz from briars haven,about an hr b4 we got rescued by the boulmer helicopter.I found that i could no longer wait for the correct time and tide 2 just drop everthing and spend 6hrs fishing cambois beach in the middle of winter.Keep your gear and get out 4 a few flounder/bass in the summer.PS i started fly fishing and have never looked back.
thinking of retiring from fishing hobby as i think fishing isnt as good as it used to be and may be i have lost my passion for it. what is you other nesa members thoughts on this. am i doing the right thing or been to hasty.
I had to give up sea fishing because of arthritis and back problems, to say I miss it is an understatement. Those foul nights on Whitley Beach having a good crack with the lads, and a few fish in the bargian, wish I could be there now.
just give it a break for a while or only fish when you have best bait ,right tides conditions ,good sea .try planning out a trip that your gonna enjoy with lads then it don,t matter if you catch just enjoy the craic

99% of why I go fishing is to just get out of the house and clear my head after a sh@ day cooped up in an office
I don't fish as often as some but I still try and get out out at least once a week to blow the cobwebs away
Mebbes take a break from it - doesn't have to be a long break either...I've not been out for a couple of weeks for one reason or another and I'm raring to get back out

Hello fishers!, have a rest, defo hang onto your tackle m8!, i gave up over 25yrs ago( work, family etc), got back in last April, best thing i've done for yrs!!!!, keeps me sane, well sort of!, I've done alright with over 80 fish landed, majority returned, take it easy for now, maybe have a bit fun mackie bashing in the summer eh! best advice i can give "Hang in there Bud!!!"
I,ve sort of let fishing take over my whole time off at the moment. When i used to go to the gym a lot. I,m going to try and get the balance right again and started today. Was going to go to Seaham fishing but hit some wieghts instead.
Suppose the moral is doing to much does pee you off.Especially when it is hard going.
Defo would not sell up the gear-you will regret it.
I was rewarded last night with a cod just under 4lb. Not my first doubler but that fish felt like a million dollars after loads of recent disappointments.

Hang onto your gear mate. Ever thought about trying over on the Mull of Galloway???? I spend most of the summer over there in our Drummore caravan. I hardly ever blank (unless I am bass fishing LOL) over there as the fishing is that good compared to this coast. Its not that I am a great fisherman,just know the marks that produce having fished the area for years.
If you do decide to come over drop me a PM and I will take you out if you want. June to September being the best months.

Thats a offer most people would snap up in a second.... I only caught 1 wrass when I went but I'll tell you this now, if you like fishing for more than just catching as in the nature and untouched raw-ness of it, that place is the peak.
Alot easier to get round than St Abbs aswell... honestly I almost popped my knee out falling down some rocks like but its breath taking.... floating for wrass and pollock with the scenery is perfection.
Even try craster if your alright walking for 30minutes to and though the castle. sometimes its a bit of a mess from the mackie bashers (messy bar stuards) but sitting there with the sun coming down and Dolphins etc is cracking mate.
I love my winter fishing but summer fishing with sun, sea and the scenery always makes me refreshed.
