Does anyone know how many magnets are actually inside a Penn 525 SuperMag Xtra? I've read alot of info on websites and can't get a def answer?? I've had a quick look inside mine and can only see 4 on the main carrier....
If I remember there are 8 but it would appear as four as they are in pairs, great fun trying to put them back together you have to get the polarity right, opposites attract and all that. They are not glued just held together by magnetic force.

You were right mate!!! I stripped the reel down and started playing around with the mags with a flat nosed driver and when one came off there is another underneath!! 8 mags all together but in pairs made to look like 4, held either side of the carrier by magnetic force only!
While your on the subject of supermags mine is about 8 weeks old and is a bit noisy when casting think its coming from the spool any ideas? thanks in advance

How noisy exactly mate? Have you got it dirty or any sand etc in it at all? If so, you can take the 3 bolts out on the mag adjustment side and the plate will come off and you can slide the spool straight out and clean it all up and get any grit out etc.
Ive recently started removing magnets for more distance, it can be fun at times.
If your reel is noisy when casting take off the side plate by removing the 3 screws that hold down the bezel then the small single screw that holds on the side plate then slide the spool out. Give the spool a rinse in clean water and spray with a little WD40 and remove the excess, also wipe around the the inside of the reel to remove any dirt. Give this a try and if it continues to make a noise you will more than likely have to take the bearings out of the spool and give them a clean.

Phil
So which magnets have you been removing from the carrier mate? Obviously if you remove 1 then another magnet will have to come out aswell or it'll drop out the carrier itself with no magnetic power to hold it in.

Cheers,
There is a sequence to follow but ive found it best to take out the ones you want and put a little bit of araldite in to hold them in, its down to preference really.
Ive got 4 525 mags and 4 magnets is ample with the reel set between 4-6 for casting. If you cant control your reel then you have way too much line on or need casting lessons!
Ive had to glue the mags in all of my reels as they pop out and can stick to each other, this can lead to sudden birds nests and the feeling as if grit is in the reel, chances are the mags have popped out and are rubbing on the spool!

I'm not touching my Super mag xtra and just leaving it as standard. Kind of defeats the object if I start taking magnets out as it then doesn't make it a Super mag xtra anymore......
At the moment I'm running it 1 full turn off the mags when starting a cast. Might reduce it more in time but it runs fine at the moment and knowing my luck I'll just nest it if I reduce it anymore
