I got the report indirectly (via a mate of a mate) from the lad that was fishing next to him; all I know is that it was a guy estimated in his thirties. He'd been across for a bit craic, gone back to his gear and next thing the lad hears an almighty crunch and the section of the cliff with the chap on it is falling away.
It happened about an hour before the water would have reached the cliffs, but obviously too rough to get a boat out. The chopper & a fire engine were there but all that could be seen from above was his box - looks like the poor chap might be under it all. I'm guessing it might be a local lad as not too many people will be travelling too far with the conditions the way they are, and the cliffs are a popular shot when there's a good sea on. I think the frozen water in the ground has made the cliffs very unstable, probably a lot more fractures around. Interestingly, only a few weeks ago a section of cliff came down at Hartley, but I don't think anyone was around to witness it.
Still waiting for further news, will keep you all posted.

Just had relayed from a mate, that the lad on the scene who witnessed it all is just leaving, and reports that they have just started digging the chap out - apparently they've located his fingers or arm or something. So reports are patchy & I'm sure we'll hear more tomorrow, but after over three hours buried under the cliff..... who knows? At least the water never covered him at high tide, so that's something.

No problems Ali, I know that the lad who witnessed it was a local and apparently didn't recognise the poor chap, so he probably was a visitor; all I know is that he was described as a lad in his thirties in cammo gear. I think all we can do now is wait and hope for the best, I doubt I'll hear anything more this evening & don't want to get into further speculation.
Hoping for the best & hats off to the rescue people who must be working in pretty horrible conditions down there, having to work from the top of the cliffs which must surely be in a pretty precarious state.
