  • what rod

I am thinking of getting a new rod (i don't really need one but i like buying tackle, don't we all) i have a greys shadow (green one) and a 16 foot triplex also greys (obviously). And i find they are a bit too soft in heavy seas and bounce about too much, I am looking at the greys apollo mk3 and the sonic sk4 both 14 footers. any advice would be very much appreciated. I am very sure that the good sea fisher people on here will know better than me as I am by no means a good sea angler i just enjoy going esp when it's cold as i have had more success then. Thanks in advance

Possibly a good bet but I had heard they very a bit too rigid and hard to get a good cast unless you have a very good technique or you are a well built lad. Thanks for the idea though as it is a good price.

do you how the accelerator compares to the mk3 appollo or the sonik sk4, if anyone has tried either the sonik sk3 or the apollo mk3 or even better both of them and the accelerator i would be very interested to hear any strengths or weaknesses for all 3. Thanks for all suggestions so far

where can you try rods do you know as i don't know anyone who owns any of the rods, and you can't tell much from holding a beachcaster in a shop i thought the shadow i own was similar to the mk1 apollo but i have fished with both now and they are chalk and cheese.

Hi silvertourist, I've tried both of the sonic rods you mentioned and both are very user friendly and great for casting. I can't say what they are like over rough ground as I only tried them out one night on Blyth beach. I'm not a tournament caster by any means but found both of them comfortable and in the right hands I reckon they will throw a lead a long way.

What Alan says is right though what suits one may not suit another, trying is really the only way to find out for definate if it suits you sir

I have the 14' Triplex and really like it, it is great using it on the beach when it is not too rough. A half decent fish on that gives a great fight, much better than just winching it in.

                    Jim.

The SK4 is great - very light, picked up mine second hand for £90 and is now the rod of choice. It castsa long way with a thump OTG or pendulum.

It is very strong, winching in logs of Roker Pier last week and a big cod no probs.

I'm over 6 foot so can use it tho!

That's my big worry about getting a rod that bends me more thn i bend it and what puts me off a mk2 apollo as i am only a little lad. I am going to have to wait and try to get a few casts with the rods previously mentioned as i don't want to buy a rod i can't use properly. Thanks for all advice that has been given all very wise words

Second that. More than copes with the rough ground but sensitive enough for beaches etc. Casts nice and smooth with no snatch, well worth a look. Go down to the HQ at Blyth if you're near and get a feel of them.

Thanks for that i forgot sonik was another local company i am sometimes in Blyth as i only live in Whitley bay so that sounds like a good plan i have had a look at all three rods and though they all seem good i do prefer the apollo over the others but i do think i need to try them all still as the apollo is a beast and so is the sonik, i think i need to go to the gym more and lay off the crisps and chocolate ha ha.
