Shields pier in the summer could do with a wave like that once every week to remove all the rubbish and clean it up.

NOT MUCH CHANCE (or is there) OF A TSUNAMI HITTING OUR COASTLINE,IT WOULD TAKE SOMETHING AS POWERFUL TO CLEAN THE PIER.
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught

was on the heugh many years ago and it was rough but nowhere near coming over the top, so we fished the end with about 8 other lads ,all going well and a few fish was being caught, for the fist few hours all was fine, yet none of us noticed the sea building up, within 20 minutes [it was high tide] the sea was smashing over the middle point of the pier and as the tide was on the ebb these huge waves were coming closer and closer to the 10 of us on the end, the noise was deafening and the waves where smashing over not 20 yards from us just like in the photo, we all decided to call the R.N.L.I just at that moment for some reason the sea dropped and we all made a dash for it, thankfully we all made it, soaked but safe one of the most terrifying moment of my life ,it was 1 in the morning totally pitch black, never ever under estimate the power of the sea . for me a lesson well learnt.
