BBC News - EU agrees on 2010 fishing limits
"And I looked, and behold'a pale horse; and his name that sat on him was death, and hell followed with hi, and power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with hunger, and with the beasts of the earth"

Our biggest problem are the gill nets which operate on the black market.
Get rid of these and we will begin to catch codlings again
If people think you are an idiot, why speak and remove all doubt !

The biggest problem is Trawling and the stupid EU Quota system.
Once a boat has there quota of Cod,they are still allowed to trawl for other species. While doing this they still catch Cod,which they can,t keep and is dumped.Thousands of tons every year going to waste.
Its been proven that Gill nets don,t do a quarter of the damage a Trawl net does......

Maybe not, but they still do a hell of a lot to the inshore fisheries....See recent Ned Farrington results to see what gill nets can do to a specific area!

              Picture this:

A whitefish trawler skipper has no quota left for cod, he tows for 6 hours and brings up 20 boxes of cod and 5 boxes of monk, what do you think he does after putting the 20 boxes of cod over the side dead??????? Moves to another area to avoid the cod? No, he shoots away again and tows back down the same line he has just come up on on his plotter or just off it!!!!! So what about dumping more cod than any angler would ever catch in his/her whole life dead back into the sea, he is getting 5 boxes of monks so couldn't give a sh*t! That is the exact reason why quota's do not and never will work! I see this practice happening every day at work with my own eyes!
And equally how does an 80mm prawn trawler(huge discards of juvenille fish) get more days at sea allocated than a 120mm(more selective) whitefish boat? It's a crazy world!

              Graham.

I am fully aware of discards and dont dispute your point about discards etc, however your point been proven that gill dont do a quarter of the damage i question. Who proved it?

Gill nets operating the black market off the Rivers Tyne & Wear do us a load of harm as these nets are set in such a way they prevent fish from reaching the inshore marks.
