  • Saltburn pier.

Here's one for some of the lads in the south of our region. What is Saltburn pier like as a venue, does it have to be a massive sea to target Cod? Is there a decent chance of catching a fish or is it very hit and miss? High water only?

I have been that way quite a few times but never fished it, always wondered what it would be like. Now that I am struggling to walk far it could be a decent venue for me if it is worth it lol.

    Jim.

don't know about saltburn pier jim, but if you are having difficulties walking far why don't you try the pilot pier on the headland h,pool, you can park your car car right next to the pier and it's only a 40 to 50 metre walk to the end and you are in deep water, fishes best when there is a big sea on but as the pier is in the bay and protected by the heugh breakwater it's always fishable, heard that there has been some good fish caught there this year ,worth a bash,

Aye it would be that John lol. Driving down that way there is actually very little difference timewise, as opposed to driving to Blyth or Whitley Bay, and the majority of my old marks are OOB for me now anyway. There are still a handful between Blyth and Whitley Bay I can fish but most of them are high water marks.

It's not great Jim. It does fish best on a big sea and there are plenty whities when it's calm. There are also a few thornback rays taken in spring to fish or crab baits. Bass also make an appearance but I wouldn't go there just to target them. I would rather fish Whitby pier to be honest.

cany travel for you any were you decide to fish.
are you looking for high water/low water shots and these have to be fairly accesible is this right

do you prefer rough ground mixed or does this not matter just trying to help if i can.

problem with the best shots easy walking distance they are popular.

I have never really been bothered about any certain type of mark John. I used to love Blyth beach but too much of a walk for me now at low water and the best high water marks on the beach are over a couple of dunes. I had loads of good rock marks north of the Tyne but wouldn't dare go there now as if I slip it is very difficult for me to get back up again.

I have a few high water marks around Whitley Bay, Colleywell, Cullercoats and Tynemouth but the low water marks that are easy access are few and far between and although there are plenty on the river it has never been a favourite place to fish for me. As you say, the best shots are always busy.

South of the Tyne, I used to fish Hendon prom a bit years ago but not been for a good while but again it's a high water mark. There are a couple of marks at Shields pier too like the Brigade hut and the first gate which aren't too bad as there are a couple of seats along there too

                      Jim.

hi jim, hendon prom still does fish at low water like everywere else it depends i would prfer the south easterly type of sea.

hall beach at seaham also good shot and you can get your car along.

deneholme at horden you can watch your car while you fishing down on the beach little bit risky.

some canny marks at hartlepool also i believe

rat house corner at roker good shot as well as glass centre up river.

I've fished loads of different marks on the Tyne skiny and actually had some decent nights( and days) there. It's never been one of my favourite places to fish but always came in handy if there was nowt doing on the coast lol.

I don't mind fishing there occasionally but would hate to have to do it all the time. I first fished Hebburn Marina in the early eighties and had a great night. All four of us came away with fish up to 4 lb that night, some good memory's, I wish I did enjoy it there a bit more lol.
